Winter vs All Season tires for G80
Wondering how many people have all seasons vs dedicated winter tires to drive in colder climates. Im not using the M3 as a daily and plan on driving during the winter when it isnt snowing but still cold (less than 30F) on weekends but worried about getting a full winter set due to accelerated wear with an M car and driving while the weather gets warm. We do get occasional cold weather spells up until May but i usually swap my winters to all seasons in March on my X3 but wondering weather it might be a better idea to keep all seasons on till May in the M3 and then switch to summers instead of running winters till May. And also looking for recommendations on what tires you went with. For all seasons im looking at the Michelin Pilot A/S vs continental DWS and currently inly looking at Michelin ICE for winters. Thanks

summers for summer, winters for winter, all seasons are no season.
Seriously though, winters have gotten much better and last longer than yesteryears, so I do not see why someone would compromise. All seasons all year long on this car are a crime and consequently, winters make sense in the winter months.

On a performance car like a M3 all seasons are a no-go in my opinion. All seasons are fine for a Hyundai but not for a M3. For me it is Michelin Pilot Sport 4S in summer and Pilot Alpin 5 in winter.

OP, you do you. Given when you plan to drive your M3 during cold-weather months (and the fact you have an X3 on winter tires for ice/snow and weekday use), all-season tires like the Michelin Pilot A/S are viable. They're certainly better than driving summer-compound tires in temperatures below 45°.
Meanwhile, I'll do me. My M4 is my daily driver, and we get all forms of winter driving conditions here. It and my husband's X3 both run on Michelin winter tires from November 1 to May 1. All-season tires for us aren't even a consideration. |

As @luckylingy says, I will do me. I see relatively mild winters and am not interested in getting ultimate performance out of my M3 -- yeah, I know, you'll say I should've gotten an M340i, but that's not available with a manual, is it? -- and all-season tires allow me to drive my M3 all year, less any days with severe winter weather. So I will swim against the tide here and say no problem with runnng ultra performance all-season tires on a G8X given my use case. And my Conti DWS06+ all-seasons are reputedly not too shabby in the high performance arena; I haven't had the car to the track or to triple-digit speeds to find out.
That is not to say that I disagree with luckylingy or other posters on the need for two sets (summer and winter); if I tracked the car and lived in an area with more severe winters, I would take that route. Besides, I can't disagree with luckylingy because I so appreciate all those great photos of Tanzanite!

I live in Connecticut. The roads are very well maintained. Snow removal and mostly smooth surface.
DWS on my F80 was perfect. In Ct you get 40 degrees then 63 degrees in 48 hours. If it snows like crazy I don't go out anyway. You got some diehards gotta be snow tire people. I've lived in the tri-state area forever. Never owned a set of winter tires ever. Use case would require; poor planning I get caught in a snow storm. I have poor judgment and need snow tires. I think my M3 can handle a foot of snow because I have snow tires. I have a winter car so if it's that crappy out I drive that. DWS call it a day! |

Aalfred, I get it. I wonder the same thing too. No question that winter tires are far superior than all season tires, but as you are not supposed to drive in cold weather with summer tires, your not supposed to drive in warm weather with winter tires. I'm in MD and our winters seem to really fluctuate temperature wise. I wonder since most likely it won't be really cold, should I put all seasons on during winter so I can drive whenever I want and not have to worry about taking my winter tires out on a 50+ degree winter day. IDK. My M4 is not my DD, so it can sit sucking on the battery tender if needed. And at this point, I think it's too late to order winter tires.
I had the Michelin x ice tires on my 435i RWD and got caught in snow several time while going up to PA to visit my dad when he was sick and those tires were awesome! I made it up so many snowy mountainous roads! I was really impressed with them. |

I've had really good results with Goodyear Eagle Exhilarates, which I even used on the track in the rain and 46F and set the fastest time. Grip is above .94g+ depending on the curve. On some nice banked roads I've been close to 1g. So that's plenty fast on the public roads. Approaching 140+ also no issue on these all seasons. Now if I get a PCD date close to winter or in winter I'll probably put stock size Goodyear Exhilarates on the stock wheels. Plus they last 2x as long.

I had all seasons on my m4 this past winter. Drove in plenty of snow without even the slightest issue. I think the stigma of all seasons being bad comes from people who either A: try and track the car with them on… they’re clearly not meant for a track. Or B: drive like a total psychopath when the ground is covered in snow, crash, and then blame the fact that it was an all season tire that “sucks” instead of them being an idiot.
If you plan on just daily driving in snow then all seasons will be just fine. If you want to pretend you’re a race car with 4” of snow then no tire is going to save you. |

That's what I ordered for my Winter set of wheels!
Fronts were delivered to the tire shop, but they are still waiting on the rears....

You'll be very happy with them! Their PHENOMENAL in rain, very good in light snow. I've had 3 sets |

I lease my M3 and live in MN and this is my only car, so I drive it all year. Since I lease, I swapped out the summer only tires with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and store the originals until the lease return so I don't have to pay the tire tread penalty. I do work remotely and have the option to not drive if the weather is really bad. Drove it last winter on the all seasons (rear wheel drive) without any issues. I don't track the car, but occasionally have fun with it, and I honestly haven't noticed much of a decline in performance from the summer tires to the all-season. Full disclaimer though, if I didn't lease I would get winter tires and swap them each fall/spring.

I have the Continental DWS on my G82 (for winter; running PS4S on 963Ms for summer) - I’m a Michelin fanboy but had to get these as they were all that were available. But to my surprise, they are probably one of the best winter / wet tires I’ve owned. Quite phenomenal, can’t go wrong. At least early in the tire’s life. I can’t comment on how the tire performance degrades with reduced tread depth yet.

Honestly I think all-seasons are more than capable for this car if all you're doing is street driving. I could MAYBE see the case for separate winter vs. summer setup if we had lots of twisties and mountain roads.... but this is the shitty, flat midwest.
