G8x vs Porsche vs Italians

Hey y'all, I didn't really know what else to make the title but I don't see myself leaving the BMW family any time soon! I wanted to get some thoughts put together on my next car though. The M4 is staying as a daily, but I was thinking of picking up a weekend car some time in the near future. I'm stuck because I've always loved Porsche. From 987 Caymans to 922 GTS, I've had wonderful opportunities to extensively drive them all (never owned one though). I've never had experiences with Lambo's or Ferrari's yet outside of sitting in them.

I Love P cars, but for a weekender I have this desire for something exotic. So today, I wanted to open a discussion with y'all and collect your thoughts on the 992 GTS/TTS, Lambo Aventador S/V/J (any of those variations), and the Ferrari 812 SF or GTS.

I don't think I need to explain the P Car... we all know what they're about and how good they are at it.

The Aventador caught my interest because of the mid-engine v12 and of course the unorthodox doors. AWD on such a powerful car seems like a safe option as well. I've heard the single clutch in the SVJ is a bit rough for flavour but doesn't help with actual speed times. I'm also not the biggest fan of the design language. Yes, it looks good but it very much follows the VW design philosophy where more straight lines = nicer looking car. That's just my opinion, I feel it to be lazy and uninspirational.

The 812 is one of the most gorgeous cars I have ever seen. It looks like a paint brush stroke on a canvas and the design looks purposeful and tasteful. RWD on a front engine v12 sounds daunting to me, but nothing some care and extra performance driving lessons won't handle. The trunk space is actually quite usable as well from what I've seen, so that's a plus.

I almost forgot to add a detail, driving. How they drive is very important of course. I don't track anymore, well... for the time being, I'm more of a canyon carver. I enjoy taking the world at my pace on the road and hit some turns that puts a smile on my face. It gives me peace to drown out any troubles I have by focusing on the road and having engine noise fill the cabin. That is one of the qualities I would also like to be enlightened on regarding these exotics.

I'm open to other exotic suggestions that anyone has had experience with from Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Mclaren as well. At the end of the day I'm well aware that Porsche is the best for value compared to these exotics, but a huge part of me wants something dramatic to put next to the M4.

Thanks guys! I'm looking forward to some great discussions!

If I had half a mil to spend on a car I would drive a mclaren 675lt, amg GT black series, huracan sto and a pista and see what I liked the best.

Those would be my options. I wish I was rich lol

Thanks for the suggestions! I can't find a black series they'd let me get within 10 feet of, but I have heard they were absolutely amazing. I'd need to hear the flat plane in person, I've heard the complaints and I want to see if it's just blowing smoke or if the complaints are justified. I'll see if I can't get my butt in one of the other three and see how they feel. What do you like with each of these cars? I'm guessing you're very track oriented.

I've never been on a track in my life. Honestly I just gave you my preference of exotics I would be interested in to expand your options.

I hop on Rennlist & FerrariChat from time to time. The above are all around $500K for excellent examples.

Oh okay, yeah I'll take a look into them. Interesting they're all track oriented cars haha

For me, a GT3 would be the way to go. If I were to pick something that was not a Porsche GT car I'd do an Huracan or Mclaren 600 LT.

I say try to get a 992 GT3RS because from the looks of it nothing is touching that car and it looks the part as well. If not I would say the next car I would try to get is the SF90 because WOW. Just saw one the other day and it is incredible.

I don't know how I feel about it, to be honest. It's such a beast with a siren's song! But, the test mule looks so... angular. It's definitely something I would need to see in person and see if I like it (same thing I had to do with the nostrils on the g8x). I'll talk to my local dealer and see what I can do about allocations and test drives whenever it becomes available. Now for the SF90, I agree that it's just so spectacular. However, I don't have any relations to Ferrari, so they'll just laugh at my face if I try to buy one. I believe someone up high enough on that food chain won't want to sell theirs either... at least not for a reasonable price. Since when did I have to dedicate a lifestyle around a car manufacturer in order to buy the model I want???

Managed to test drive the 675lt over the last week. Great recommendation! I also managed to test drive the 720s, and I believe it to be a competent upgrade or revision of the 675lt if you're not tracking too often. They're also roughly around the same price so I'm putting it on the list. Definitely exceeded my expectations!

As others suggested, I would go straight to a McLaren. I know a lot of people who owned and enjoyed Porsches due to their dynamics and feel, went to McLaren and never looked back because it just amplified that feeling from Porsche's. However, reliability ain't the best.

812 is absolutely gorgeous, although i haven't driven one myself so can't really comment on the experience. But for me when I think ferrari I automatically gravitate towards something mid engine. At that point it's a question of performance over drama. Yes an f8 or even a 488 will give you the performance, but IMO the 458 or f430 give you drama (and the performance ain't bad). Doesn't hurt that they can be had relatively cheaper ($150k-$250k range).

If you want a luxury supercar, I don't think anything comes close to a Ferrari. Tributo or stradale be the best imo.

In my position, I am fortunate enough to have driven/experienced a small handful of exoticos. Cars like the 812 Superfast, 488 Pista, 458, 997.1/997.2/991.1/991.2/992 GT3's/Turbo(S), 991.1/991.2 GT3RS, 991.2 GT2RS, Mclaren 600LT, Audi R8V10+, 930 Turbo, and likely a few more I'm missing.

For me, HANDS DOWN, there is no better sports car than the 991.2 GT3 w/a manual. Perfect in every way for driving. Screaming the flat six to 9K rpm and rowing the gears secured in the carbon buckets is perfection. I would drive this car everyday into my grave.

As most of us know, 2 years ago they were selling in the $165K range. Silly me thinking that I should wait until they got to <$150K before I took the plunge. doh

I'll keep the F430 in mind! I definitely love how it looks. Here in Georgia you can find one with a clean title, good service record, and no accidents (as long as theyre honest) for anywhere from $120-$150k. I remember when I first were looking into them, my wife next to me was surprised by how "modern" it looks, of course we know that means timeless design. However, she has this odd stigma that getting a much older Ferrari says we are cheaping out to be part of the brand. For car enthusiasts like us on the forum, this is not true and I don't care about what other people's negative thoughts are on this piece of heritage... but she does, and happy wife is happy life. I'll bring it up again and see how she feels in a test drive. I appreciate both of your inputs! I almost forgot about the f430 and how great it is!

My local dealer actually got a 991.2 GT3 in sitting next to the 992 gt3 haha! I'll ask him to schedule a test drive of it. It may be a pdk though, for better or for worse not a lot of people drive manuals in Georgia. It's also going for $205k iirc, so I feel your pain

I'd get the GT3 for several reasons: 1) Reliability 2) Depreciation or lack thereof 3) Wonderful engine note and 4) the ease of daily driving (tough to find parking for a Lambo)

This is actually not too far off in accuracy. Yes, ultimately, I agree that the McLaren is a more capable driver's car. I am faster in this Mc than the GT3.

At the same time, factoring in the ownership experience, not even close. The GT3 is easier on the street, holds value incomparably better, and is nonsensically reliable.

Honestly, dollar for value, the 991.1 GT3 with PDK is a better car to own than the 600LT. With that said, still no comparison to that 991.2 MT GT3. Sportscar perfection.

yeah, i mean you have to treat the exotics like a small child. Definitely not something i enjoy.. The P car is slightly more low-key..

GT3 is a good middle ground car if you dont want to go too crazy. But after the Mclaren, can't go backwards imo. Only P car i'd consider over Mclaren is GT2RS. But Mclaren also has the 765.. so there's that.. The never ennding rabbit hole.

GT3 non-RS cars absolutely depreciate. They’re like iPhones, the newest ones have people waiting around the block, the old ones are nice but old news and anyone who paid premiums when they were current ended up losing money. Purple 991.1 GT3RS was a $300k car in 2016.

458 is way better than any F430 variant, including the Scuderia. 9000RPM, much sharper controls, much better transmission (DCT vs SCT), lower overall running costs, much better performance. Peak Pininfarina design; so good, Ferrari has simply iterated on it for over a decade. Both gens will continue to appreciate, but 458 will reach higher heights and move faster. F430 6MT is overhyped, I liked the F1 car better, had more fun when it came down to it. Would take a Scud over an F430 6MT 10/10 times. Easy decision. Get the 458, it’s worth the extra. Swap the headers, cat pipes, and mufflers for Novitec/Fabspeed hardware and you’ll be surprised to find it one of the most thrilling street cars for the money. These are the real-deal burbles and pops that all these cheaper cars are trying to emulate (poorly). In a world with speed limits and law enforcement, I appreciate a car that’s just as fun at 45mph as it is at 145mph.

Non-GT 992s are nice, but not quite weekend car material IMO.

Aventador S and above with rear-wheel steering are actually good drivers. Never driven an SVJ, but friends whose opinions I trust say it’s a top-tier drive and worth the money.

A nice LP640 can also be an option, but maintenance costs are absolutely ridiculous. There’s no better crowd pleaser for the money, though.
