Extreme contact dws06+ SL rating?
How important is it to be xl rating for these cars? Trying to run 285/35r19 for the fronts but are sl rated vs xl for oem tires.

Furthermore, when selecting tires for an xDrive vehicle, you need to most importantly keep tire sizing in mind. BMWs max recommended circumference differential, "should not" exceed 1.0% front to rear. Meaning the rear tires can't be more than 1.0% total diameter larger than the fronts. Use a tire calculator.

What’s the number?
The SL/XL thing is the pressure at which the tire can carry it’s load. SL is 36 psi, so just don’t go above 36 psi (you shouldn’t be, it’s a performance car). What actually matters is the 2 to 3 digit number. That’s the actual load rating. G80 comes stock with 100 front and 99 rear. I wouldn’t deviate too much from stock but anything above 95 is objectively fine (95 means 690kg btw, so that’s plenty for a 38xxlb car with a front axle GVWR of 1200kg). Edit: I just looked, the DS06+ is SL 99Y. That’s a perfectly suitable tire for a G80.

The approved tires for the G8x M cars are XL rated. The load index is unrelated to the load rating so finding an SL tire with the same or higher load index isn't a good way to do it.
The thing about the XL rated tires that allows them to be inflated higher than standard load tires is that the tire carcass and particularly the sidewall is reinforced to a higher level. That means they will feel better to drive due to the stiffer sidewall and be less prone to tire failures due to damage to the sidewalls (e.g. potholes and other hazards). There are further reinforcements possible for tires and that's denoted by RF (run flat). The load index is important for track driving where you'd want an upgrade over the stock tire's numbers due to load transfer under cornering and braking. The stock tires do take this into consideration, but always great to have additional margin. I personally wouldn't bother with SL on the G80/G82. 275/35/19 DWS 06+ tires are available in the XL rating.

I run the DWS 06+ in 285/35-19 F and 295/30-20 R with no issues at all. I run these as a winter set and will switch back to the PS4S when temps will be 60+ consistently. Unless you plan on tracking your car on the 06+s this wont be an issue. The softer sidewall improves the ride quality as well.
I run them at 30 PSI cold, 32/33 hot which is well within the range.

I run Blizzak LM-32 275/35/19 SL96 square setup for winter. They’re solid, even on spirited runs.
Factory pressure is 32F / 35 R for XL rates tires. These SL tires require 33F / 34R to achieve the required load rating. |
