Who's running with no front plate in Ontario

Curious who is braving it in Ontario, and if/how many times you've been pulled over. With the mass roll out of various region (and OPP) police having ALPR (Automated Licence Plate Recognition) technology, I'm hearing about more and more people getting ticketed for no front plate and tons of other violations.

What have Ontarian's luck been like with no plate thus far? I'm not interested in side mount or sto n go solutions, so it's either going to be with the supplied front bracket or nothing...preferably nothing.

Thanks for any feedback (and pictures of your "properly plated" G8X if you care/dare to share!).

I have a front plate on my G87...before owning the M2 I had a Corvette and within 2 days of owning the Vette I was pulled over by the OPP for not having a front plate...

Were you ticketed? I hear a lot of warnings are going around. I've never been pulled over for my dark tint or tinted plate covers. I wonder if it was just that a Vette gets more attention from the police?

Doesn't the Carbonio one just put it lower on the grille? For me I feel like it's either no plate or might as well just put in in the center on the OEM bracket. I don't know...

i like it cause it's easily removable, i'm talking like 5 seconds on and off

but yes it does just go lower on the grille. also it's NOT compatible if you have the ACC sensor

Good to know! I won't have the ACC sensor. What does it connect to?

I did switch over to towhook later.

I've been driving without a front plate for about a year now on my M4 competition.

Local driving in Etobicoke and Oakville area with occasional trips on the 401/410.

No tickets so far!

I have even had cruisers stopped at intersections right across from me at a red light where they can see the front of my car for an extended time and no one has pulled me over.

I am wondering when my luck is going to run out

What makes you say that there has been a recent enforcement effort?

Good to know! I drive around the Oakville, Milton and Mississauga areas mostly.

Most of the regional police and OPP cars have now been fitted with license plate readers on the top of their cruisers. It has two HD camera that face forward and one facing backwards. Basically scanning thousands of plates (or lack of a plate) every minute. Rollout for most regions was this past summer.

California seems way more relaxed than in Ontario (Canada). It seems like half the cars in LA are driving around without a front plate despite your state's front plate requirement.

I wonder about that sometimes......even though they can't read the front plate because you don't have one - I think they can scan the rear plate since cameras face both directions.

I think I did drive by one of those OPP cruisers parked on the 410 some time ago.

According to that article they seem to be looking for stolen plates or outstanding warrants and suspended drivers more that lack of a front plate....but still

If you don't have a front plate it will still notify them, and they can choose to act on it or not (or if they are driving by you, the front or rear cameras can check your plate). They are also pulling people over for expired plate registration (now that we don't have validation stickers). I've heard a lot on other forums of people getting pulled over way more for tinted plates (since the cameras can't identify the plate so it notifies the officer). All very annoying...I know, if you follow the law it shouldn't be annoying lol. I wish Ford had just done away the front plates when he was contemplating it back in 2019.

I wonder if the issue with tinted plates has a lot to do with people avoiding toll charges on the 407?

That is where I spotted that OPP cruiser with the roof cameras.

I don't recall seeing any local Peel region police vehicles with the system....just seems to be OPP for now.

Almost all the OPP cruisers have them now (they are much smaller than the old roof mounted ones). Halton and Peel region police have them on a ton of their cars.

I've never been pulled over for not running a front plate on any of my cars during the 10 plus years I haven't run one. I mostly drive in Toronto on city streets but sometimes around the GTA too. I've pulled over for RIDE checks and the officers have never said anything. My rear plate cover is tinted too.

Thanks JohnEnglish 😉. I want to run with no plate, but I'm nervous about it. I don't care about the fines, more so just the inconvenience of being pulled over (my luck it will happen on my way to an important meeting).

YMMV, but I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Judging by the number cars you see on the road with illegible rusted out or peeling license plates the police don't care except as an opportunity for revenue generation.
From an environmental standpoint alone front plates should be eliminated.
There is the life cycle environmental costs of the plate itself and the slight decrease in aero efficiency times a 2 million + vehicles.
