I picked up my car in August of 2023 and it had 3/2023 installed and only updated to 7/2023 in November. It froze on me once so when I took it in for the 1200 mile service I told them. They updated to 11/2023 during the visit. Don’t just ask them to update it or they won’t many times. Say it froze and they will update it. Mine was true but I’m betting if you tell them that they will update.

I’ve been trying that once a week. For me, if I do that, I cannot even manually get it to search for an update. It just says up to date. I also live in a rural area where cell reception is atrocious. I think that is mostly my issue.

Try going into diagnostics mode. Hit start button 3 times quickly without touching the brake when the engine is cold. My car connects to the WiFi in my house but if it only downloads via cell, I can see how that could be an issue. Do you go to an area with good cell service? I heard the engine needs to be cold so I think you’d have to leave it until the engine cool down.

If none of that works can you take it to the dealer? Just tell them it froze on you. Little white lie😉

Def cold here. -20 windchill lol. I’m a wuss and garage it for the winter. I’ll try diagnostic mode and see if I can get my wireless router to reach the garage somehow to attempt WiFi. Appreciate the input!

Are we able to setup the car to connect to a WIFI SSID? If yes, can you share how? I didn't realize this can be done.

On separate note, if someone can help educate me. I have the car for 2 months now and been exploring it:

1. The car's communication to BMW App (assuming remote communication) is only through LTE (or cell connection, which is why the car has a phone number). The same is applicable for native Spotify, connective drive apps... they communicate via the LTE/cell connection of the car. Do I have this correct?

2. For any software update, it's done through the the BMW App on your phone. If you're in the car, the connection from the phone/BMW app to the car is through Bluetooth and WIFI (is what I understand). If WIFI, I don't see any connection details on my phone that states I'm connected to the car via WIFI ... or is this only applicable for CarPlay via Phone?

I'm trying to understand why BMW doesn't allow the car to connect to a home WIFI SSID and do the upgrade through that connection. Thanks.

Not sure whether this may be helpful to anyone or not. The previous software updates that I had installed from the phone to the car were done by switching the connection from Apple Carplay to BMW idrive - in the Comms section, and then running check for updates and updating the car software.

When the iphone is connected with Apple Carplay - the car will not update from the phone and hiccups to run the update directly.

I've had the car since Aug. 2022, and went through two updates till 03.2023, and since been there. Waiting for a notification to update to the 11.2023

They have 3 updates a year March, July, November. The dealers get them on the date for manual update and the OTA is typically right before the next release(OTA for November close to March, OTA for March close to July).

I was trying to delay my break in service untill March to push for them to update myself but I have to go in pretty soon but hoping to try and go back to the dealer for an idrive update in March due to “car play” issue s

Yeah you gotta re enable it. It's pretty deep in the settings in a weird spot I can't remember ( I think it's in the preconditioning settings for the climate control). But it happens with every update.

I did try looking for it in idrive settings before posting.....it is in a weird spot and I couldn't find it, but will dig deeper.

Grateful it's not a feature they removed with the update, because I didn't even know about it until 1 year of ownership. Usually just use the phone app to remote start.

When you turn the car off it asks to precondition it next time, press that and it should be there.

Just to confirm you have the latest BimmerCode update from your app store and also the update files it downloads within the app? Android or iOS?

Edit: Android app had an update posted today with new asset files downloaded then within the app
