iD8 and head-up display owners
Do you enjoy it? Worth the money?
Debating whether or not to include it for my G87 order. Although I have seen it a few times in person, I'd like to get your opinion, someone who uses it daily. Having a hard time justifying the $1100 price point. This car will not be my daily driver and I will be using apple CarPlay. |

I was on the fence with this because I didn't much care about most of the Exec pkg.
The tie breaker for me was my older eyes. I'm now having issues with near-field vision, so if I can clearly see the horizon then I struggle with things like the speedometer. HUD uses your far vision so it's clear to me. YMMV, especially if you are young.

I have idrive 8 and the HUD. I was hesitant at first, but after a month of using both, I’ve learned to love them both. The HUD with idrive 8 is far superior than on idrive 7. For example, when using the Navigation, the HUD actually shows a high rez map with the turn by turn instructions. Really nice,,,,

Heads-up display is a must in my opinion. It's so nice not having to look down to know how fast I'm going. The added bonus of the different views (M Track mode, turn by turn directions, current speed limit etc) just make it that much more functional.
It's one of those things you don't realize how nice it is until you have it. But then it makes it difficult when you drive other cars that don't have it. That happened to me all the time between my old F80 which had it and my wife's Rav 4. I will note though that iDrive 8's screen has more visiblity with my seating position than the normal gauge cluster in my F80. In my F80, the steering wheel was in the way slightly and depending how fast I was going would have to lower my head in order to see everything. Obivously the HUD was very useful here. I don't have that problem with the CF buckets and iDrive 8. I can see the entire screen nicely in between the steering wheel. But I still use the HUD for it's ease of not having to look down.

I have iD8 and HUD in my X7. iD8 is ok... I'm sort of indifferent about it. I don't hate the tacked on display as much as I thought I would. The graphics are cool and it's nice and crisp, but honestly I'm totally fine with iD7.
The HUD on the other hand is a must have IMO. Now when I drive a car without HUD I feel handicapped.

I’m a big fan of the ID8 and the HUD. I just traded in my 2021 M3 for a 2023 M3. I just did a 6 hour road trip in it and really like the features of both of them. It does take a little getting used to with the full touch screen and less buttons, but the experience is better in my opinion. My only objection was having to get used to a different way of selecting certain options. Once I understood how they built the menus differently it was ok, no issues at all.
The HUD in the newer models is also much brighter and easier to read IMO. |

i was slamming limiter by accident with my hud in road mode because i wasn't looking down at the screen, but with it in sport/track mode it really helps me shift. i would recommend getting hud just for the rpms it displays in sport/track

For me it just became habit - I honestly almost never look at the main display gauges anymore, just the HUD. I think in the future, I could probably be just fine with a HUD + infotainment combo with no central gauges (or minimal gauges instead of the huge displays we're getting). IMO, the HUD is the main reason to splurge on the exec package.

For spirited road driving or track use it is a must if you manually shift - too easy to run into the limiter if you have to look down at the tach.

Stop leaning and just do it.
It's not a lot of money (compared to the cost of the car) and not something that can be easily retrofitted. And if you ever want to sell the car, it could likely be a huge turnoff for prospective buyers (like nearly everyone who added to this thread) if HUD is not present. And the HUD is pretty cool. I forgot the rest of the stuff in the package, but it's really the HUD that you are after here anyway.

Does anyone know if you can get the “hockey stick” view of the tach on the HUD in iDrive8? Mine only shows a horizontal tach when in Sport M-Mode.
I saw posts about this in iDrive7 where people said to ensure that reduced view isn’t enabled but I don’t see such a setting in iDrive8? That would suck if they eliminated the hockey stick tach |

I only have 200 miles on my G80 but I already love the HUD and also the heated wheel. I wouldn’t want to be without either.
Heck, I even love the automated trunk.

You’d be surprised how many don’t like it and even turn it off.
