BMW launch control is a total disgrace! What a total joke!?

Also it has a counter. Apparently only 50 launches on a total lifetime of the car. WTF?

Damn...just as I almost convinced myself a 75k M3 ‘will do just fine, no need to spend 110k on a base 992’ ...they pull me back in 🤨.

Hey all,

I’m the guy driving the M4 in the video. First off, thanks very much for watching and sharing on your forum. I hope you enjoyed. It was just supposed to be a bit of fun, and we are looking at how we can do more ‘scientific’ drag races in future.

Bit of background to the race. I launched the car 4 times that day and the launch you saw in the 2nd race (in the video) was the best I got. But it still wasn’t great. Admittedly, it wasn’t the best location as there was a slight incline on the circuit, but then the Porsche also had to deal with that (it got a perfect launch every time).

I tried to follow the launch procedure to the letter. Give it ample time to build boost pressure and then reacted as quick as I could off the line (I think I actually got away a bit sooner than the 911 in the second race), but the wheelspin started to occur at the top end of second gear.

I think there were a number of factors as to why this happened and other reviewers (such as CarWow) got a better launch. I suspect the biggest one, however, was the tyres. CarWow had Pilot Sport 4S, we had Cup 2s. As you all know, the grip and traction from the Cup 2s is fantastic when they’re warm, but very much the opposite when they’re not up to temp. We had about 5 mins sitting on the line between races, plus it was a cold day. My hunch is that if the car had the Pilot Sport tyres on, traction levels wouldn’t have been so tyre temperature sensitive and we’d have got a better launch.

Wanted to explain the above as I know it’s important!

Again, thanks for watching the video and if you could give us a sub that would be hugely appreciated.

James

Having driven the 922 911 on a track it's a better track car but I had just as much fun in f80 m3. M3 is a good all around package while porsche needs track time to get your money's worth.

Really appreciate you taking the time to comment here. In the other part of the comparison it is mentioned that the M4 is much stronger out of corners than the 992 but it is the opposite before entry where the M4 get unsettled under braking.

Did you time any laps to see which was actually the faster car on the track that day?

It’s a fine line tho between not letting the turbo build and holding too long.

No problem. We did do some laps and they will be featured in an upcoming video (that I still need to edit).

SPOILER – M4 is quicker 😉

The Car work experience boy that does the You Tube videos is pretty bad.

Here is a proper drag race comparison.

And a proper comparison against the C2S from one of their highly respected actual journos. Well worth buying car magazine issue or subscribing online. This was a very good read.

My overall comment. Best to drive the car yourself. A tiny number of You Tube reviews come anywhere near explaining the experience. It's a superb car. I prefer my M2cs but I suspect 7/10 would prefer the new M4. The F82 wasn't that great but the new one is absolutely fantastic.

No spin on this video. M4 hooked and just took off.

Just cuz you don't see slip doesn't mean the traction control isn't limiting power to avoid wheel spin. The game vs a porsche is all about the traction as the 911's rear engine setup makes it much more planted coming off the line. Awd will make a considerable difference in launches and always has

Would say more impressive that a stock Carrera is this fast. It always shocked me how fast C2s were.

Agree here. The M3 is probably making 150-175 more hp yet the 911 is able to use more power more of the time. A Carrera S, which still likely has 100 less hp in the real world than the M3 would have been gone.
I wonder how the AWD will do - certainly better hook-up, but more complexity, a lot more weight and the M5 never seemed to launch really well.

I think the base C2 has done 1/4 mile in 11.5 which is absurd for a 379 hp car.

BMW will list it at 3.6 though for no particular reason haha

If this video is anything to go by, I think that would be a very close race

I don't actually think so because the RWD vs AWD played a major factor in keeping it tight. RWD 911 vs RWD M3/4 the 911 will get off the line much better. Again, the M3 has a huge power advantage over the 911S even...
Either way, drag racing isn't my thing. Fun, but relatively pointless. I will be interested in seeing the M3/4 N'Ring lap time though.

Same thing here, I'm more interested in track times!

I also have no doubt that the 911S will jump of the line quicker compared to the M4, but watching that video, there is no big advantage of the 911S in the roll race, and if we look at the 1/4 mile time of the Porsche (that is slower than the recent 1/4 mile time they had with the M4), I think it is going to be a close race

992S runs 11.2 1/4, but I do suspect the M3/4 Comp will be close because it has 150 more hp given the base car is making close to 550 crank given the WHP rating.

Either way...bring on track times.
