G80 M3 or Tesla Model S?
Owning an M3 has been my dream for long. However I am now torn. With the impending onslaught of BEVs, is this a right time to invest good coin in a G80? I can't afford both an M3 AND a BEV. I have to choose between a Tesla Model S and a G80.
Any of you go through a similar thought process? What do you think? |

I drove the Tesla plenty and have owned a few non M bimmers. I guess my question is more philosophical than about the performance or driving dynamics. If you can buy and keep one premium car should it be a G80 (ICE) or a Tesla (BEV). BMW is also putting more chips in the electric bucket with ix.

The way I see it is the BEV cars are similar to smart phones, they will constantly become outdated as tech will keep going forward.
Whichever you chose it's bad investment, they will both depreciate and end up being outdated, you should choose the one who brings you most enjoyment, life is short. PS: I personally don't enjoy much driving Tesla cars, I find them to be OK A to B cars.

Very different cars. I don't see cross shopping Model S and G80. Model 3 Performance makes sense though and the two will have similar performance and dimensions. Tesla yobbos love to call it an M3 to poke at BMW fans so there's that too.

While the Model S represents the future, keep in mind the body style has been around for a very long time and is about to get a refresh... If you said Porsche Taycan I wouldn't even hesitate.

I actually almost bought a model S performance instead of the M3 because I don't have patience. But tesla gave me the worst customer service I have ever encountered so I cancelled the order. After some reading I'm not the only person with that problem. They know their cars sell to the masses and they won't even answer questions or give proper service.
The car is fast but it's like an RC car it has no soul you just floor it and there's acceleration. A 6MT m3 is way better it has emotion and a connection. It's not a soul less appliance. |

I really don't follow their news closely but I just checked out the refresh... Very minor changes to the Model S exterior but some changes to the interior and powertrain. When I heard about an upcoming refresh I expected they redesign the exterior as the same shape has been around since 2012. Apparently not. They're following Dodge footsteps

I have had a Model S for the last 4 years. It's an amazing car. And I'm looking to replace it with an M3 (or M2).
TLDR; I would definitely get the G80 if I were you. The Model S is a very big car with a very large turn radius. But it has a low center of gravity and violent instant acceleration that hides its size. The best way I can describe it is that it's like a regular 5-series BMW that feels heavier but has instant acceleration and the best navigation system I have ever used. If you like a comfy car that is super easy to drive, has the best technology and is very fast for day to day driving, the Model S is a great car. It is also very cheap to maintain, although it does depreciate like a 5-series BMW. I have had some problems with mine, but all handled under warranty. And I do have panel gaps, but it's not something noticeable. Despite the brutal acceleration, the Model S is not a sports car. I test drove a Model 3 Performance and I would say the same thing about it. These are not sports cars in my opinion. You do not get the chassis, handling, steering, etc. that you get in an M-car. For example, I never take my Tesla out for a fun drive on twisty roads. It's great for what it is, but it feels like a large, heavy appliance on wheels that pins you back like nothing else when you accelerate. Is that fun? It was fun for a while, but now I just drive it like a commuter car. Btw, it is probably the best commuter car. So it really comes down to what you value. The G80 will undoubtedly be a far superior sports car. I'm interested in the G80 because I value the feel of the car more than the tech or instant acceleration. Regarding the impending onslaught of BEV vehicles, to me that is a major reason to get the G80 (or F87). As soon as you buy a Tesla, it is outdated. 2 weeks after I bought mine, they improved acceleration on the new cars. A couple of months later, Tesla decided to include more features into the car for free. Etc. This is great for Tesla and for innovation. But it makes my car feel like it's not special at all. My car has the smaller battery, with the slower acceleration, without the x-y-z features, without the better computer, etc. This type of thing will continue for a while. As technology improves, the car you buy today will kinda suck in a few years. On the other hand, a retro M2/M3 (especially with a manual transmission) is like a classic that is cool for many years. At least that's how I view it. A car at this price point is an emotional purchase for me. It's not like an iPhone that I replace a few years from now. If you lease, of course, it may be a different story. I can go on forever on this. I'm obviously not a typical Tesla owner since most of them swear by Tesla. I think it's an outstanding car, but I will be able to buy a far superior Tesla in 10 years. On the other hand, the M2/M3 type of car is a dying breed. Get it while you can. |

We will have electric cars for the rest of our lives, while this will be probably the last M3 with a petrol engine.
Go with the M3 at this round, you will have plenty of time for a BEV in the future |

If you give a shit about driving dynamics, go for the G80. If you only care about getting from point A to B, get a Prius. Tesla is overrated. It's a POS for the money you pay and it will get outdated very fast.

The model s is not comparable to g80. Model s is too big, too heavy, more of 5 series comparison.
I think the model 3p is a better comparison however at this point it is probably outdated in performance and handling compared to a g80. It definitely gave an f80 a run for its money though. |

Anything but a Tesla, it's the antithesis of performance cars.
There's years to buy into the whole EV crap if your interested in that rubbish. If you enjoy driving & want a performance car buy an ICE car & enjoy it whilst you still can. I'd rather catch the bus than drive a Tesla or any other EV for that matter.

Depends if you want something exciting around corners, or something blisteringly fast in a straight line. Or maybe what you can use more often. I'd prefer exciting around corners, but I never get to use it. If you can go for the Plaid, that will be pretty exciting (low 9's in the 1/4 mile). I'm checking out the M3, but Model S Plaid will be my next car.

Build quality and design have kept me away from Tesla. I really don't think any of the S3XY lineup is very sexy, and seeing the worn leather and various misaligned components on a one year old car make me want to vomit.
