RWD or AWD - Advice?
There are probably a lot of us now trying to decide between RWD and AWD. I've driven rear wheel drive M/AMG/(Alfa)QV cars for the last 12 years and have been waiting for G80 Xdrive details to come out before I decided and placed my order.
Now that the full details are out, it's time to make a decision but I'm not sure if the $4100 is worth it for me given my driving habits: --It's will be a daily driver --It will NOT be tracked --I live in Maryland so it will be driven in rain but won't need to be driven in the snow --I would classify myself as a spirited/aggressive driver, but it's not like I'd be using launch control every day... And I'm sure the difference in 0-60 time is all off the line traction and not as important for a rolling start/normal life So, with the improved way the RWD G80 puts down the power, do you think AWD is worth it in my situation? Really appreciate the feedback. BMW has made this so much more difficult now! |

Year round driving aside, to me the AWD is a $4,100 option for improved 0-60 time off the line. IMO not worth it. But if it was free, of course I'd get it. More importantly, is the time factor. My RWD is Scheduled for Production. AWD likely will be available Nov. RWD was available in March and you still have some early birds waiting for theirs in June or July

I'll probably lease the first G80 that I get. In terms of a lease, $4,100 would be approximately $100-$120/month. I'm not sure that the xDrive, for me, is worth it. On the other side, if I do get a RWD, I'll end up having a summer and winter wheel/tire set up - which would likely be close to cost of AWD! |

And I have had performance cars over the last 20 years and never had a set of "winter tires" or "winter wheels". Having said that, I've always had a 2nd car that I could drive if there was snow, ice (or even rain, since I hate having to constantly clean my car, the lazy person I am ). But, whatever performance cars I've owned, I've always driven them in the dead of winter, with my summer tires and rims, as long as the roadways are salt-free and without precipitation. And I'm able to drive spiritedly (mostly on back roads) even with temperatures below 32 degrees on a solid summer, high performance tire (like the PS4S). Never had a loss of control or anything. And when in doubt, just keep your damn DSC on, let the electronics work their magic to keep you and others on the road safe. No need to be a hero. And I definitely track my performance cars at least 2 to 3 times per year, and I haven't ever wished for AWD on the track, and don't need it on the road with the way I drive. Though I understand for many, they want to be king of the road, even in inclement weather...so AWD makes sense for them. Glad we have a choice... Last edited by KevinGS; 04-19-2021 at 11:44 AM.. |

I got my (RWD) G80 competition on thursday and have so far driven around 500 km in it.
If AWD had been available from the start i would have most likely ordered mine with AWD as i would think that 510 HP is too much for just the rear wheels. After having driven the first 500 km i can say though that i would order it RWD again immediately. The car has more than enough traction and handles the power extremely well in it's RWD version. The weather in the last few days was good though : mostly dry roads and only this morning a little bit of rain and slightly moist roads. Of course with a lot of rain or in winter on snow a AWD version will have more traction. For me though this is not really a big benefit as i would always adapt my driving on slippery roads and do not have the wish to go as fast on slippery roads as on dry roads. So for me it is easy : RWD without a doubt. |

$4100 residualizes out to about $50/mo on a lease. I'll happily pay $600/year for the wet and winter weather traction. Not to mention flat footed sweepers.

Curious to see how many people will still choose the RWD option (and why) of the G8x, now that X-drive has become an option. I'm not going to trade my G82 in for X-Drive version, but I would have paid the extra for it if It was available at launch.

I plan to keep with the RWD version. I just can't seem to justify the extra $4,100 for AWD living here in Phoenix. The only real reason to go AWD out here would be purely for the 0-60 times. We rarely go up to the snow in Norther AZ during the winter months and even if we did we'll take the wife's SUV anyways.

So much of this decision comes down to driving style and local weather.
For me the 6MT and RWD combination makes every twisty road and traffic opening exciting... Turn rev match and DSC off and feel how potent the engine really is But if you're looking for top end track performance or dealing with ice/snow regularly, no question the auto and AWD will be worth the extra cost. It doesn't snow often in my city, but the thought of hooning around in an AWD G8X sounds pretty damn exciting!

I've ordered an M3comp AWD because I'll keep my RWD M140i alongside it.
By the way, I have also a Maserati RWD and my brother's M8 comp to use...so 2RWD and 2AWD

AWD! This thing is going to see a lot of snow up in VT. The only way for it to be better would be if it was AWD with a 6MT. This will be my first ever automatic car.

Didnt read thru it all (8 plus pages) but I have both with the M8 and the G80-- plus I had the AWD F90 M5.... its ironic but now that I have the G80 I seem to have more dig lineups than ever on open streets with other cars where I wish I had AWD. But then when driving thru nice turns and bends, the G80 steering is better than the F93 AWD chassis set up for obvious reasons. The BMW AWD system in the M cars has been incredible vs the likes of my 2 RS7's, and even a W213 E63S.
Its nice to have choices. Not sure if this was posted in the 8 pages but a pretty good video on AWD vs RWD with a reasonably objective analysis on a wet and dry track.

But yes, if it's all about 0 to 60 times, and racing people on the street, get AWD. I find 90% of my fun with cars on twisty back roads, auto crosses and on the track, which is why I never found the urge to buy an AWD car. And I've never cared how my car performs in the wet, because on slippery surfaces, any modern traction control system with a behaved right foot will keep you safe. And no, I'm never racing around from light to light when the road conditions are slippery, nor am I testing my mettle on twisty roads (or even on a track) in wet conditions. It's just not fun to me, even though with these modern AWD systems, it can be quite safe and even exhilarating. For me, it's the difference between the highly-capable, but sterile AWD 911 turbo. Sure, it's amazingly fast, and the chassis is beyond capable...but give me the "slower," more purposeful, dizzying GT3 any day. The good news is there's a place for both in the world of high performance machines, so I'm glad Porsche makes them both. And I'm glad BMW offers both an AWD G8X and a RWD G8X. If the new M3 only came in AWD, I likely still would have purchased one at some point in this generation...but I know it will likely feel a little closer to the F90 than to the M2. And that would have saddened me a bit. But I'm sure the G8X will still be a great car in both forms, AWD and RWD. Having only an AWD version of the M5 makes sense, because it's built to be a highly-capable daily, executive transport. |

I have an F80. It's very capable with winter performance tires. With the wrong tires AWD doesn't add much.
If your an enthusiastic then RWD is the way to go. It's more rewarding because you have greater influence over the car's dynamics through weight transfer. When you exit a corner you need to be patient and resist getting on the throttle too hard and quickly. With AWD your lose some of that dynamic. |
