2022 M3 Comp. xDrive - One year model before LCI?

HI Gang,

I believe history is repeating itself...somewhat.

Seeing that the G80 Competition xDrive will have a SOP of 7/21, this likely means that it will be a model year 2022, correct?

As the LCI SOP is 7/22 for both the G20/G80, this means that the 2022 M3 Comp. xDrive will be a one-year production model before the LCI...

The same thing happened w/ the 2008 e90 M3, and the 2015 F80 M3. Both one-year only models prior to the LCI.

I guess that's the only disadvantage of being released a few years into the current sedan's production cycle.

The only unique aspect of the new sedans is the fact the RWD models are being released early in the product cycle (MY2021), giving them a "theoretical" 2-yr pre-LCI run.

Early adopters, rejoice!

LCI #1 for the G80, like the F80 before it, probably won't amount to much. Just new tail lights, maybe a few sedan specific minor interior trim pieces to go along with the G20 lci. More updates will come at LCI #2 which it will share with the M4

It will definitely be MY2022, yes.

Also true, yep.

It's one disadvantage. The other is that it only gets about four and half years on the market while the M4 models get over six.

The M3 will get two LCIs, unfortunately.

The first one comes along with the series car and has updates on tech, interior and rear end.

The other one, or the complete one as I call it, will get front end changes, which is aligned with the 4 series and M4, plus whatever else (idrive master upgrade for example) is available at the time.

The G80 is a bit late thanks to the pandemic and the BMW intentionally delay the 4wd models as their marketing plan goes. As a result, the G80 AWD model is left with one year before LCI.

While the community tends to brand the 4er/M4 LCI as "LCI #2" for the M3, this isn't an official term that BMW recognizes.

It's certainly true that the M3 will receive updated headlights when the 4 Series and M4 do because it uses those parts instead of the ones from the 3 Series. But that is the only difference between how the M3 evolves over its lifespan and the how the 3 Series, 4 Series, and M4 evolve over their lifespan.

Although many folks put place a great deal of importance on cosmetic updates (in part because they reveal to onlookers that the vehicle is no longer the absolute latest and greatest design), it's worth remembering that BMW makes incremental changes to all of their products over their lifespans. This results in new features being introduced in nearly every year the vehicle is on the market. And some of those features may impact the day to day ownership experience more than the appearance of one's headlights.

Just my 2 cents on that.

So would this mean that the G80 M3 will have it's final model year in 2025? So end of production would be around June 2025?

I only ask because I'd be starting a 3 year M3 lease around March 2022 and then I'd be able to get a final year production M3 around March 2025 (the last few months of production) when my initial M3 lease is done.

I just want orders to open up for the M Xdrive...I never cared about the LCI timing when planning my purchase unless it’s just a few months away and will not start now. Hopefully though the LCI will bring never seen amount of improvements. When a better car become available it’s a win in my book when I don’t need to wait 7 years for a big upgrade

Hmm. I've been looking at late model F82's recently. Maybe I should start scratching money together for an LCI G80 as I would like to own the last ICE M3.

I've been out of BMW loop so I'm a bit confused.
As with the M3, it's now coming with ID8, so the M3 is now in LCI. Will the M3 still get exterior changes in a year or so along with the M4?

From what i understand, its as below.

Change 1: Update carried over from 3 series in MY23 (not an official LCI)
Change 2: Update carried over from 4 series in MY24 (not an official LCI)
Change 3: Official M3/4 LCI for the first time and timeline is TBD as in the below thread.

Hmm I thought up to Change 2 is already done as now M3/3-series has the M4/4-series front.
Either way BMW is going to be busy for awhile!

No, the M3 got the non-m-specific changes from the 3 series LCI for MY23--most notably the change from iDrive 7 to 8. The M4 will get the equivalent changes along with the regular 4 series for MY24.
