I have read several comments on a squeaking noise coming from the steering column of some G8X cars.

Well, my G82 started to squeak. I took it to BMW who carried out what they called a recommended BMW service bulletin which did not fix the issue.

Just heard from my BMW service manager yesterday who advised that BMW Australia have directed them to replace the entire steering column and all associated parts. I presume this just the parts inside the car as the noise if absolutely coming from the wheel somewhere.

Thank goodness the parts are in stock and are being send to the dealer. I just left it with the dealer to fix as I have another vehicle.

I really do hope this fixes the issue as it is annoying. It should if it is all new.

Has anyone else had this issue fixed or had BMW direct that the entire steering column replaced?

Was not super loud and only happened from time to time. Normally when moving slowly and hard turns. Annoying though in a new car.

yes, i have just had mine repaired a few weeks ago. it does solve the issue. this is the right way to do. i have been dealership 3 times. finally it got done.

UPDATE - BMW installed parts and apparently did not fix the issue. More parts ordered and will be installed this week. They have provided me a loan X3 during this process.

No squeaking for me but I do hear knocking/rattling noise coming at a low speeds sometimes. Especially when I immediately press and release the accelerator. Sort of like when a car lurches forward.

6.5 weeks later the squeak in the steering has bene fixed.

Two lots of parts ordered and installed by BMW under warranty.

I must say BMW were great. They provided a near new X3 during the wait for parts.

Here are the parts they ordered in case anyone else has been having issues. Apparently, BMW are aware of some cars with issues. This was for a G82 comp x-drive in Australia RHD.

I called it a squeak type of noise, BMW are calling it a knocking.

What is strange I could of bet money that it was being caused by something inside the steering column inside the car. That is how it sounded. Apparently not. Whatever they did has fixed it though.

I would have them look at the strut mounts

I’m starting to see stuff similar to this pop up more frequently. I’ve had a front left clunk/knock sound for over a year, only during warmer temps. The dealer had the car for a few weeks 10k miles ago. They weren’t able to fix it, and it’s something I’ve lived with for some time. I’ve had the car torn apart a few times trying to troubleshoot and I’m confident it’s the steering rack; BMW have a pretty hefty track record of faulty steering racks, mostly for odd noises.

So frustrating. Mine appears to of been fixed. Hopefully stays that way. It took them six weeks as i noted above. Mention my fix to them and are what they say. Mine also happened only now and then. Good luck.

From what I can tell on the video I think yes. Your noise if worse than mine by the sounds of it.

when you're turning the wheel is it an intermittent feeling or constant? I keep hearing a low hum when i turn if i'm stopped. I can't tell if it's just NVH from the electric motor or something in the column. It's pretty subtle though.

I left mine with BMW for two weeks. They have me a loaner.

They tried several fixes but eventually changed out the electric steering motor. I am not mechanical so i am sure it is not called that.

The service manager also mentioned to me that BMW knew of an issue. That is in Australia. I might add BMW Australia are excellent with after sales issues.
