I got mine PPF’d because there are so many trucks on the roads near me. They kick up a ton of crap and/or dump trucks that don’t cover their loads ultimately dropping crap all over the place which literally sandblasts the front of the car. So I wanted some protection to the car. As a poster earlier said, the current PPF’s are virtually invisible. You can’t even tell it’s on the car, it’s crazy. BUT, it costed me a ton of money, the downside.

These days for an OE-quality job (not some random traveling painter who sprays trade-ins for dealers), I've been quoted $750-1200 for a front bumper and $2000-2500 for a front end cleanup (bumper/hood/blended fenders).
The PPF was like $500 through the dealer - a pre-cut kit so not a bulk wrap but an OK job.

I felt the same way about not having PPF. Had never applied it to any of my M cars before and paint generally held up well against the rock chips. But living in CA you are nuts not to have PPF. Just get a really good installer. Most high end films hold up well, have long term guarantees and are somewhat self-healing.

The prior owner probably went to a discount shop and did not use a quality installer or film.

Why PPF for the next owner? Let’s be realistic most won’t keep their cars past 3-4 years. My G80 is at Port and I’m not wasting the money this time when it gets here. My F82 has the entire front and I’m getting rid of it after 4 years. Total waste of money

And buying a brand new M3 and getting rid of it after 4 years isn't?

It boils down to whether you want to keep the car. Far too many are worried about nicks and scrapes and what not. For me, I am buying an M3 for the thrill of driving, both on and off the track. I don't think about paint chips and the like. Don't get me wrong, I don't want my car all banged up but it doesn't bother me much if it receives the "normal" chips and scrapes. I have done ceramic coatings in the past and while its no PPF, it gets the job done and looks good. Just my opinion, its not much but hope it helps.

I didn’t PPF my car for the next owner, I PPF’d it for me even if I don’t keep this car for more than 4 years. I cannot stand any rock chips, nicks, or scratches and after I saw how soft the paint was on my X3 M40i (prior vehicle to my M3) there was no way I wasn’t going to do PPF on the high impact areas.

Everyone is different. Some of us hate seeing that on our cars and some don’t. It’s great we all have the options to best suit our needs, wants, desires. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Can you imagine if we all agreed on everything? We would all drive the same car. Even the same color. We would live in the same town. Same style house. Go to same restaurant. We should be happy others have different opinions. By all means the OP is asking for yours so share it. Doesn’t mean it’s the right one for someone else.

Some of my BMW's are leased & gone in 3 years. My long term BMW's are usually kept around 10 years. Current two, a bought out lease & a straight buy, will be keepers.
My oldest vehicle is a 1998 4X4 Pickup, mileage unknown, used regularly for both on & off road work. All original paint. Has some small chips here and there but surprisingly not as many as I would expect. Only cosmetic ugly is the center grill insert portion (plastic?) that has UV fade. I don't do shielding on either the leases or buys. Its just a matter of choice. If I was a person who agonized over any chip would definitely put on the best shielding available its just a matter of personal choice.

I was wondering about that as well.... also, I saw pictures of Rolls-Royce and Bentley getting PPF at an installer's shop. I asked him "why would anyone who can afford a Rolllys-Royce care about a few tiny scratches or dings on her new Rolls?" His response "so I can make a decent living?" |
