in my humble opinion, and yes i know BMW is known for their straight six engines.
but that S65 engine is probably one of their best ever engines
if you are in the "i want the lowest 0-60 time so i can show off" crowd then maybe the newer turbo sixes are for you

but for me, a manual NA V8 was amazing
i owned 2 E92 M3s
one with EDC, one without
the one without, in manual was probably the most fun i have had in a car
also looking at the styling, the E92 still looks clean and classy
what comes after it is when when BMW turned into a JDM design school

Agree on the E9x M3. I had an E90 M3 6MT with EDC for 6 1/2 years and it was a great car. So much fun and glorious is a great way to describe the engine/exhaust sound.

In my eyes, it's slab sided with no arse to speak of. Timid front end. Weak quarter panels.

And the V8 reminds me of a Mustang and the Mustang GT350 does it better. Hard pass.

To me it's really sad that the g series is such a beast but I have no interest in it because of it's looks. I love the f82 cs. I wonder if anyone retro fit a s58 in the f series

DriftHQ has done a B58 run by standalone in an older BmW chassis. They went that route because it wasn’t as expensive of an engine, so it’s doable. They developed mounts and adapters for the engine and the trans to be used, etc.

The problem is the previous chassis aren’t all that good, so if you’re going to have a premium engine, you might as well be on a solid chassis, but you can put the new engine in the older ones, just takes some money.

Interesting to me that the looks of the G series always have to be justified.. always come with a disclaimer.. why would anyone want to purchase a car with an asterisk? I’ll take my f82 all decade.

Also owned all four gens, and loved each of them, but the G series cars are just so unbelievably good.

Delighted to have added a second to my garage to have the best of the series, a G81 with xDrive and a manual RWD M4

The only ones that continue to bring it up after all this time are the ones that don’t care for it. Those of us that have it and love it don’t care

I drove all generations of M3 (except e30) and I own now 3 M3. I can tell most emotional and in my opinion best M3 is e92.

I don't know why everyone is so upset about the front when all they see is the rear.

why even bother replying in here then?

I've had all of these cars EXCEPT the G80! I do have an M5 and X5M so I feel like it makes up for it a bit.

My favorite was actually the E46, but I loved each of them in different ways. The e92 was supercharged and was such an amazing car end-to-end. And the F80 was tuned and while a little twitchy, once I put Sport Cup 2s and Brembos it was an absolute monster. These cars rule!

Base price for the F82 CS was $104k. Base price for G82 CS is $125k. Still comes out to around $130k in 2024 money, so not a bad deal for $125k.

Never selling mine. This engine sounds soooo good, and the fact that it revs to over 8,000 RPM is just ridiculous. I have an exhaust and a tune so I'm up to about 450 hp, and it's totally fast enough in 98% of all my driving situations.

Yes, my G82 is way faster, and I do appreciate the sheer thrill of its acceleration and torque.

But that little V8 in my 2013 M3, it's irreplaceable. And for anyone who feels compelled to keep up with the G8X platform, just add the 650hp supercharger, problem solved. I've driven a few 650hp E9Xs, one was a manual, and they were bananas. It pulls harder than a G8X AND sounds amazing to boot. And I like the steering better in the E9x platform.

Since I drive my E93 all the time, I needed pure reliability over outright speed...but I still may go back and get another E92 and supercharge it before it's all said and done. I'll take a supercharged E9X platform over hybrid and electric M cars...because you get the speed AND an amazing soundtrack. However, the E9X platform is certainly worse for the environment, as we E9X owners live at the gas station. And with the supercharger? But, for me, it's Worth. Every. Penny.

I may need a hybrid or something truly efficient as a carbon offset at some point. The problem is...I'd rarely drive it. Life's too short to drive appliances, even when simply going to get groceries.

Had an E36 E90 G80 M3. G80 so much power, straight line beast and I actually liked the front was sad to see it go. But for the track I’ll take the M2 any day.
