EverydayDriver - Mustang Mach 1 vs BMW M4 - Horse vs Beaver

The latest BMW M4 has controversial styling and nearly identical performance to the new Mustang Mach-1. They don't match on price, but are the same in nearly every other metric. Which one does muscle car the best?

I love Mustangs. I’ve owned many, and will probably own many more. My most recent was a GT350 — amazing machine. But I don’t really think there is any realistic cross shopping between a M4 and a Mach 1. You’ve got what… $20k at least between them?

I was cross-shopping various Mustang breeds while planning my move back to a Manual when I had my DCT F87C. So few manuals left, didn't have much of a choice. I test drove several versions of the car over time. I liked most of the versions past the stock GT, but utterly hated the interior in all of them. Even the GT350 (non-track-pack-thingy) wasn't fun enough to make up for how dissatisfied I was sitting in it. The GT Mustang is floppy and incoherent without the now-discontinued Performance Pack II. The adaptive dampers in PPII, the Mach 1, and the GT350 are a MUST for that platform to shine (I can't remember what the Bullit has and doesn't have).

I still very well might have bought one if I hadn't gotten lucky with picking up my G80.

But that's just me. Our two Utah friends in this video certainly didn't seem to care about the rental car insides of the Mustang compared to how much they hate the nose of the of G82. Fun times.

Also, the price-gap with the cars feature-matched is much less than 20k. It was about 8k when priced the Mach 1 vs my car. The insides of our cars even with just Extended Leather are well worth 8k.

You're right about the interiors. They are not bad when you consider the level of performance you can get for the price, but if you are used to a high quality interior then it can be difficult to accept. I certainly wouldn't be satisfied daily driving one, but the fantastic chassis and glorious flat plane crank V8 in the GT350 helped me tolerate the cockpit.

Absolutely. By the time I was serious about changing my car, the GT350 was gone and we'd already heard that the Mach 1 wasn't getting it's engine. The GT350 I drove was a friend from out of town's, and he had two engines blow (covered under warranty). He'd had the car for 26 months, but the dealership had it in their possession for almost 6 of those months. Internet anecdotes aside, it's pretty clear why the Mach 1 wasn't getting it. I still came close to putting a deposit down on a Mach 1. In this day and age, an NA V8 with a manual and a competent chassis (with the right options on it) is a tempting thing.

Have yet to watch but I'm frequently skeptical of these guys, they often don't know what they're talking about and rarely say much of substance.

Eg in their 3-series vs Giulia test, they claimed the 3er was significantly lighter. According to each manufacturer's website however, the 3-series is a smidge heavier.

Comparing an M4 with a Mustang is like comparing Beef with Tofu...they may have the same number of proteins...but not really the same taste

It's almost in the muscle car category. Used to be like a chisel before but now a fat 3 series that can dance a bit.

Muscle cars have more than 6 cylinders fellas. Cmon now. I've owned mustangs and bimmers for 25 years. As a bigger guy the interiors and seating always is an easy win for BMW. But the growl and torque of a blown V8 cannot be matched IMO.

As controversial as the G8x styling is, the jokes about the front end are getting a bit long in the tooth…..

Definition of muscle car
: any of a group of American-made 2-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving.

Those two...if you drive an M4 you didn't earn it? WTF. I can't believe how good this car is to drive, but I'm picking the Mustang.

The Mustang sounds spectacular which will make it sell. Can't get past the Mustang interior.

Must have been a Blown engine in a Black Camaro I ran into yesterday. Low and tires a ft wide. Should have known.
Open highway in Texas. Did the dance. From 65 he walked away easy. I was surprised.

You can still get a new Mustang GT with Magneride, it's just a stand alone option now with PP1, like how it has been with the 10spd cars since 2018.
