I could see it happening towards the end of lifecycle where BMW typically streamlines production as a production runoff. Or BMW might just let RWD and manual transmission go for the entire run as its swan song, all this power and what Mercedes has done with the W206 C63 AMG, I don't see RWD or manual making it to the next generation.

As long as Porsche continues to sell M/T cars there is a chance.. They know a lot of owners hoover between both brands regularly.

I think we will see manufacturers converting most of there mainstream fleet to Hybrid/Electric drivetrains and keep some halo model full Ice until the regulation forces them to stop.

Cars with big horsepower nowadays have issues putting down the power on the tarmac. 4 wheel drive systems does improve significantly the traction especially launching from a standstill. Handling while pushing the car on the track however seems to have lost the magical feel of old rwd bmws. I might be nit picking but on normal day to day use, I would still go for the M Xdrive for the way better traction.

Not sure where you see that? The official RWD spec. thread a few posts down reads 3890 lbs for the M3 and 3880 lbs for the M4. So official launch numbers compared the AWD adds 100 lbs for the M3 and 99 lbs for the M4.

On the E92, there was one engine power rating and just real wheel drive. Simple. Like every M3 before.

Now we're here. 2 power options, 2 transmissions, 2 drivetrain options. Doesn't it cost more to develop a platform that can handle all these options? Yes it does I know, but isn't there some weight penalty for engineering everything together?

Even on a stick car with RWD, aren't there some components that have to be shared, and thus over engineered for that base car?
There are really only three configurations.

Base with a stick.

Comp with automatic.

Comp with automatic and AWD.

That’s it. You can’t get the non-comp with an automatic, or any comp with a stick, so even with two power levels, two transmissions, and two drivetrains, you only have three combos to choose from. The decision flowchart is pretty simple:
Stick, yes or no?
If no, then AWD yes or no?

More importantly, how many other 500hp 4 door sedans, that legitimately can be used on the track or as a daily, can you also get with a 6MT

A few good points made. But this one I have a question:

Apparently I have to categorize myself into the "average buyer" as I'm honestly not aware of the key difference between the M xDrive and the none M except for the obvious integration with the electronic M differential which the company has touted for generations with the RWD cars already. Is there anything I missed with the M?

Also, Audi the competitor hasn't been trying to differentiate (on a marketing level) the mechanical AWD found with FM longitudinal engine layout cars, from the electronic AWD with transverse engines. Audi calls both Quattro, despite of essential differences.

The real weight addition with AWD should be some 150lbs. But in the case of the G8X, there could be a few AWD parts integrated into the chassis that's unavoidable to rwd model which close the weight gap a little bit.

The AWD isn't an afterthought with this generation, the RWD seems to be...

Then they don't know either. They say Mexico in their FB post (not even sure if it's the same vehicle, but the plate number is the same).

Sure. My point is that when introducing a new product it’s confusing the message if you feature some other product or service, and then do not even explain that’s what you are doing. Next we’ll see the cars depicted with M Perfirmance parts on them, but it won’t be mentioned that the parts aren’t in the order guide, nor how to obtain them.

Also, BMW AG does promote the Individual program, including with dedicated press material and literature. BMW NA not so much, though. Maybe they’ll start doing that soon, and they’ll issue a dedicated press release for it. And in that press release they can feature an M4 that’s not in an Individual color. You know, just so people know that non-Individual colors exist too.

Similar to the m5 LCI launching in Imola Red, yet the m5 doesn't have a decent shade of red. :

I am seriously considering speccing my car with 4WD.

Does anyone know when this option will be live on the configurator?

Or would I be able to phone my SA later today and get them to amend my order? (I am still waiting for an allocation on my RWD M3CP).

If you consider it do it or I think you’ll regret it. Orders will likely open up in the next month if the launch is in August which I believe is what they call the date when cars can be released to customers. Before that orders need to be processed and cars built and shipped...
