I've been trying to think a future replacement for the M340i in a year or two and I'm having a hard time finding something that would fit the bill. It's a shame since the M3 Touring would be perfect.

- 4 Doors (toddler)
- Carry our 2 Husky dogs
- Capable of attending 6-10 track days per summer.

I checked many possibilities but all have in a direction or another some bigger compromises

- X3M
- Macan GTS
- Panamera GTS Sport Turismo
- E63S
- RS6
- ?

The SUV types seem to be a bit counterintuitive in the sense that you'd be better off going to the track in bigger sedan that an SUV. The other have potential but the consummabales have to be considered and will it be fun ? + price vs an M3/X3M/Macan GTS..

Hell even a touring M340i would satisfy me 100% it's a shame...

Any thoughts/ideas/experience ?

EDIT: Started looking into the new M440i Gran Coupe and hatch space could be doable.

The X3M and X5M might surprise you. RS6 is beautiful, but not really a drivers car. Same for the E63, except not as beautiful.

Of the cars on your list, the Panamera would be my choice.

Thanks for your input, Panamera was my no1 choice but I really need to drive one, some say it feels like a 911 sedan and some say it feels huge. It is 1 feet longer than a M340i so it is physically bigger..

The second annoyance with the Panamera and most Porsche is tire availability that can be a small challenge and add cost when using often on track.

I had a x3m. It wasn't for me, but the engine was amazing. I went to Audi, got a A6 allroad and used ttrs. I love the A6 visually and as a family hauler. But it's not a sporty drive, my it annoyance. I stalk this forum in hopes of the m3 touring coming. I'd pull the trigger in a second. If it doesn't I'll probably trade in for the rs6. Maybe I'll just tune the A6, but I don't think it'll be exciting enough. I will say one thing I love about the A6 and I wish more brands did. Being able to adjust the suspension to a higher ride height in snow, but drop back down for normal driving. Love that feature, the benefits of a suv when needed, without having to have an suv.

Then, BMW sells the cars for $170,000,000 but it does not make $170,000,000 in profits from it, far from it. And it sells the 200 US cars for 17MM, but you want them to pay 20MM (i.e. even more than they get back in sales, let alone profits) up front to get the car federalized in the US? How should that work?
Believe I read BMW makes about $8,000 per car. A $20MM fee to federalize them would cause a loss before you even count in any modifications required to meet the US standards.

Caddy offered a very hot Corvette Powered "V" series 6MT station wagon a few years back. Ran the Ring at 8:12. Sold OK but no big winner.
BMW was around $5k per vehicle on a GLOBAL avg but that has declined.

US is one of the least profitable markets for the group. Japan is more profitable than the US with only a fraction of the unit volume.

New CTS wagon sales were Keebler'd a little. By little I mean by a a gigantic amount.

Early on I said the E63S Estate's days were numbered in the US and it's now bye bye.

CTS wagon was 10 years ago….now it is highly sought after, trends change fast.

New 6MT Acura Integra is coming as a 5-door hatchback.

Signed and I wasn’t surprised by the forum poll’s overwhelming preference for the G81!

We have had M3s and an X5 M. We just got our first ever Mercedes- a S213 (wagon) E 63 S. WOW. The sound, speed and handling is next level from an X5 M. The X5 M is fantastic for an SUV, but the E 63 S Wagon is in a different class. We had to step out of the BMW family, because BMW does not offer a high performance wagon here in America.

Looks like a bunch of new stories on BMW confirming they still have no intention to bring it over. Such a bummer.

BMW is preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of M, bringing this to North America would be a way more ballsy than a few limited edition colors. Come on BMW finance and marketing, take a hint from days of yore

Agreed. I took ownership of mine (after backing into an allocation after waiting >8 months) after my RS6 was damaged at port and after test driving an M3 and I couldn't be more satisfied with my choice. I can see why it's such an enthusiast favorite after owning because it combines all the elements so beautifully.

The RS6, while beautiful to look at, is not emotional or dramatic enough despite its high capability. It's too much of a GT car. The M3 was just not practical enough. Its trunk is the same size as my previous M2, which isn't enough for me since I plan on stowing away strollers for long-distance commutes. YMMV. That, and it's way too expensive for a mass produced car. Great performing car, though.

A wagon form M3 would definitely be worthy buying, imo. Once you own a wagon, it becomes quite clear about the compromises sedans and SUVs both require.

I'm in the same boat with the RS6. Just test drove one and the power was very lackluster and the thing felt like an absolute barge. And way too quiet, could barely hear the v8, the Cayenne Turbo has a better exhaust note. Audi just tries to be too sterile, they need to let their hair down a bit.

I was torn a bit ordering a RS6 or a G80 xdrive and for almost 1/2 the price of a used RS6 (market is still nuts) I am going G80 all the way.

I see the RS6 more of a M5 competitor and effectively a less serious and more touring product. I don't think the RS6 holds up well to track days, the M5 does pretty good for what it is.

As of now I still see the G80 M3 as a superior product but it really depends what your after.
