BMW has unintentionally created the best racing seat for disabled person in G8X M3/M4

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I ordered the cf buckets without sitting in them and my order finally arrives in a few weeks. I’m also paralyzed and use a manual wheelchair so I’ve been a little worried about getting in and out the car and being comfortable.

I got to sit in a Kith M4 today and boy am I glad I purchased the bucket seats. These seats fit my frame like a glove and were surprisingly comfortable. The main reason I purchased these seats was to prevent my legs from moving around during spirited drives. In my E92 M3 I often have to pick my left leg back up and place it back on the kick plate while driving. That hump in the middle of the bucket seats in the G82 prevents my legs from sliding around. Getting over the large side bolster when entering the car is my biggest challenge. I am able to get over the bolster but I am worried about wear from sliding over it with my legs. So far my only solution is to put a towel over the bolster in order to prevent wear. I am able to get out fine by hopping over the bolster and back into my wheelchair. The gap between my wheelchair and cf seat is over a foot long but I am able to transfer with ease. The seats are so thin my wheelchair can fit in the back seat without having the passenger seat moved up.

I will also be wrapping the back of the seats in PPF to protect them from my wheels or chair possibly scratching them while driving. I have always wanted racing seats in my car but couldn’t get them because I needed power seats. I can no longer physically move manual seats as you use your lower body to move them back and forth.

BMW has unintentionally created the best racing seat for a disabled person. I should have shot a video on how I got in and out with the wheelchair during my visit but below is how I get into my E92M3 which is the same exact way.

UPDATE: Since I got my car I made a video showing how I get in the M4. It’s very different from how I normally transfer but a friend recommended this way and it seems to be the best method to get in and avoid contact with the side bolsters. I also have the carbon fiber seats wrapped in PPF to protect from the wheelchair if I accidentally hit it against the back of the seats.

Update 7/28/22: I have updated the post with a video explaining why I love these seats so much and how they are perfect for disabled drivers looking to still enjoy sporty cars.

Awesome, great to hear the news! Sounds like you are going to have a lot of happy miles ahead of you once the M arrives.

Seeing the wheel chair disassembled to fit in the back raised an idea in head. They make kayak carriers with "load assist" - do they make something similar for wheel chairs? I can imagine it's not ideal to handle the wheels or leave them on a seat or the ground after going through rain.

Hey man I injured my left leg and arm in a motorcycle accident couple years back. I'm in the process of ordering my M3 and deciding between the buckets and the regular seats for the same reason. My main concern is getting out, I usually turn my legs to the left and pull myself out of the seat. With this method my thighs are basically on the bolsters while I push myself out. The bolsters in the buckets look quite high. I guess the only way I'll know is if I get a chance to sit in one, but I want to get my order in before the end of the month 😭

This is why I have towels in my car. I keep a towel on the back seat where the wheelchair sits to prevent indentation in the leather and if it rains I have a towel to set on the floor so my mats don’t get dirty. All these extra steps are a small annoyance to avoid any damage.

You’re going to have a similar problem as me. I can luckily hop over the side bolster into my wheelchair as you see in the video but you will have to put your legs over it. The seat does go down very low so you might be able to get over depending on your height. But one thing I can say is if you are a similar body type to me these seats are unreal and worth every penny.

Probably should have included that as well thanks! When I get my G82 I’ll be doing a similar post! Only a few weeks away from picking up my car!

What baffles me is the fact that you twist that chair all the way and managed not to scratch the car. Any movementin the video made me cover my eyes and cringe, yet you didnt damaged the vehicle.

Your post though was a lesson of inner happiness for me.

I am happy to see that the car you love works wonderful for you.

Enjoy it in good health!

It’s taken years of practice and luckily the chair is very light. Thank you for the kind words
