Link to the exact time he helps settle the AWD vs. RWD debate for on-track, perfect conditions performance:
https://bit.ly/3CyLN3i (had to convert to bit.ly since the forum removes the time marker and embeds the video in place)

"In the rear wheel drive car, you have to come away from the throttle.
I kept it absolutely nailed then.
Honestly, if you're gonna get yourself an M3, THIS is the one to have. It's the one I'd have.
Didn't think I'd say that once, but yeah, a four wheel drive M3 is DEFINITELY the M3 to have."

Also, the xDrive was faster around the track by half a second, compared to their other RWD G80 M3. Exact same conditions, same driver, same day. About 1% faster for that track in perfect conditions.

And there you go. Just about exactly what I thought. After some seat time in My M3CX, no doubt it's excellent. Don't hate - it's just great.

As horsepower metric approaches 500 and beyond, physics becomes more important. It makes more sense to distribute this horsepower between both axles and four wheels.

Great video.

I do plan on tracking the M4CX I ordered and while I was just looking for some variety compared to my past RWD M's, it's nice to know that the X-Drive is not only capable, but can even outperform in certain conditions.

I'm completely sold on the performance of this vehicle but I'm going to wait for the facelift (literally)….

When is this facelift arriving... ? Will the LCI have this new version of a front end you're speaking of... ? Do tell...

Not bad at all. I won't be tracking my car, but I was expecting a huge time difference between the two variants and it does not disappoint. The RWD is very capable.

I would personally go for the xDrive version. It makes sense in my area and you can always configure it like a RWD 👍

That circuit has lots of slow tight bends and S bends that will benefit having AWD. Pretty impressive that RWD is only half a second off.

Kudos to BMW M for bringing RWD and AWD at the same time in this generation. More so, that they weren't lazy with RWD traction optimization! They could have said: Don't fiddle with G8x RWD traction ... G8x AWD will fix this.
But they went the long way and put all engineering efforts in making perfect RWD performance/traction in a way, that even skilled journalists after first driving impressions with G8x RWD thought, they were allready driving the AWD variant!

If you look at the bedford track timing list, you see how the G8x RWD (being shy just 0,5s of the AWD) totally obliterates the F8x RWD!

So: Totally in awe of performance of BOTH AWD and RWD here.
Curious to see G8x Competition AWD performance in sport auto supertest. Yes - I'm sure, it is to come!

No doubt if you want the fastest most relaxing version and most flexible get the AWD automatic.

I've been posing this in numerous threads.

For AWD automatic just floor it and go!

6MT is still my choice

Yes, quite: read from another, somewhat more devil's advocate perspective, you could say that this video is actually a testament to how formidable the RWD is by itself. Sure, there's more to life in opting for the x-drive than half a second advantage when blasting round a track; but still, it's pretty impressive--and heartening for existing RWD owners--that there wasn't a more chasmic difference. Stunning engineering applause warranted for both models, then, in a sense.

Agreed. I still wonder on longer tracks (such as Nόrburgring) which one will be faster. I would not be surprised that the RWD is faster on a track like that. Anyway : who cares. Both are magnificent.
