Wheel Oxidation

2,000 on my 2022 M4 with 825 bi-color wheels.

One of the wheels has some nasty oxidation in the clear coat already. I noticed this around 1,200 miles. I am 99% certain nothing I did caused this. Wondering if y'all have any suggestions on how to fix this? It's only on one wheel, all others are fine.

I've tried claybar and i've tried a very light polish.

Should I keep going with a cut and polish?

I wonder was there some steel on steel rubbing in the hub/breaks and you got some really hot Sparks melted in to the paint?

You can see a similar color on the rotor and hub

It's a bit hard to capture in pictures. Here's another one with the problem area circled.

The rotors and calipers seem to clean up good. First picture was right after a wash.

Just throwing an idea out there but have you tried a heat gun? I've seen similar spots on paint get rectified with the application of heat. Don't over heat it though.

Hard to tell what it is. Is it rough to the touch?

I'm not sure what's causing those specific spots, but I can see in your pic that you have pretty good spider webbing and scratches on those inner darker sections. I don't know how you wash your car, but it may be time to re-examine your wash routine to prevent further damage. How is the rest of the paint on the car?

Have you tried using just regular cleaner wax to remove those wheel spots? The wheels are not matte, right? Only use if they have a clearcoat.

Worked like a charm getting off similar spots on the black window trim of my wife's Mercedes. Be sure to use a microfiber applicator/cloth when applying & removing when dried....

I'll give that a try. Yeah it's not as glass smooth as the rest, not exactly rough. I tried a clay bar but no luck.

Rest of the car is fine. Yeah clear coat. I think some of those micro scratches are from my attempt to polish. I will come back in and wax once i figure out what's going on. They are not visible in person like in the picture.

No not tried that yet. I will give that a shot. Yeah they are just the 826m bi-color wheels. Clear coated and painted as far as i can tell.

This may seem unusual but try this. I had similar spots and this cleaned it. Also removed water spots on my ppf.
I bought a used MacBook and it had some hard stains that alcohol wouldn't clean. This spray cleaned it up with no problem.

Be super careful on using chemical sprays on your car. There are some options out there I’ve heard people say that can eat right through your ceramic coating regardless of if they’re advertised as safe. Not sure if you have a ceramic coat or not, but just keep it in mind.

I have the same problem with the 825 bi-color wheels on my 2022 M3 and I have only driven it from the dealership to my house. I have less than 70 miles on mine. I have been paint correcting and doing a proper cleaning. I pulled the wheels off to coat the calipers and wheels and noticed the spots on the wheels when I was peeping them. They are all over my driver side wheels, but just on the front face of the black finish on the wheels. I haven't worked on the passenger ones yet so I'll be surprised if I don't find more of the same spots. I have tried clay and light polish and some cutting compound. It doesn't seem to affect the spots at all. It almost seems to be under the clear. The wheels are smooth as glass. The dealership did a half ass wash and out way to much tire dressing on it when I picked it up but I don't think they would have caused it but they might have. Anyone else have this issue or find a solution. I am ready to call the manager and tell them to replace my wheels.

This is literally a detail spray. It did nothing special

I've yet to figure anything out. I've actually started now to have the clear coat peel on two of my wheels. it's very disappointing and fees like defective clear coat. I have it on 2 of the 4 wheels. I perform all the same maintenance and cleaning on them.

I am going to try a light polish and wax here this weekend and will report back.

I had issues with wheels on my x5 and had service manager get a approval for 4 new wheels.

I would not polish or wax them at all. The less you do to them before you see a dealer the better. The polish might take more off and then they might say you polished it off or had a chemical reaction all together.

S55 M3 (and OP), the discoloration looks like something was (over)sprayed onto the rims and left to dry. As Bigworm recommended, I'd demand the dealership take first crack at a remedy.

Now, if those blemishes appeared after I'd possessed and washed the car myself a time or two, I'd suspect hard water spots, or some chemical/cleaner which had been left to dry on those surfaces. CarPro Spotless does a great job on removing hard water spots, and CarPro Eraser removes oils and other contaminants (used a last prep step before ceramic coating). Other detailing brands offer comparable products; I just suggest based on personal experience.

(FWIW, I too have bi-color 825s, still blemish-free even after one Michigan winter.)

Im having the same problem with all my wheels after a few brushless car washes . I brought it to 2 different car detailers and had them try to fix the wheels and nothing… I have the tire and wheel insurance hopefully that will cover it!

I’d say in both situations a wheel cleaner is being left on too long, no products should ever be allowed to dry.

I’d try a fall out remover, then a non-acidic wheel cleaner and then a light polish. And also, unless you’re confident doing it yourself, get a quote from a detailer. It might only cost $100-$200.

That definitely is product left on wheels. Your car wash you use is not rinsing it off enough. I go back with a damp rag and get any residue left on wheels.
