Different types of emissions. The "P" in GPF stands for particulate, which is the main source of smog. That's what they are after with the GPF, which eliminates 70~90% of particles, so it is worth the tradeoff of the slightly higher fuel consumption. It is the same type of tradeoff than with a catalytic converter.
