What traction mode do you use?

Historically I've used mdm.

I've been meaning to play with the 10 stage traction so today I put it on 8 and drove it around.

I immediately noticed (I could be wrong) the shifts with the zf have much more of a kick in the butt than I'm used to with this car, I was a pleasant surprise to say the least!

Am I imagining things?

Anyone else here played with the 10 stage settings much?

I have only played with this on the track. Call me cautious, but I prefer not to turn off traction at all on public roads.

Yeah it's probably a bit selfish of me with this much hp but I've always run everything off on my lower hp cars.

Not sure if that's irresponsible or not

I think it all depends on your skill level. You probably have owned multiple M cars and other performance cars so the chances of you having a mishap are nilly. Me on the other hand have driven luxury barges for the last 20 years will more than like end up in the ditch or up a tree. I won't be taking nannies off anytime soon.

I use MDM Stage 7 daily. For AutoX, I use Stage 3-5

For clarity, what is MDM stage 7? I believe you can either be in MDM mode, or one of the 10-stage traction settings.

From BMW

M Traction Control and MDM are different functions, hence there is no M Traction Control setting which equals MDM.
Simply spoken, M Traction Control is a slip control mechanism that controls rear wheel slip in 10 stages when DSC is switched off. Level 0 is OFF and allows for unlimited wheel spin. The higher levels allow for very limited slip. The slip is controlled using the engine‘s rpm as the only parameter. The vehicle’s yaw rate is not a controlled parameter here.
In contrast to M Traction Control, MDM is a part of the DSC mechanism and actively controls the vehicle‘s yaw rate. DSC/MDM use engine power controls as well as brake interventions to stabilize the vehicle dynamics on the road. MDM uses M Traction Control levels 4 to 7 depending on yaw rate behaviour.

I believe Stage 9 is for track and Stage 10 to protect the Rear tires and bring them to appropriate temperature. Found the documentation here

Interesting as on my X drive I can not adjust the traction unless Im in DSC off (cant use mdm at all). Then I run 5 on a dry day after the tires are warmed up.

I didnt have this option on my RWD car prior so it was always MDM.

You need M Drive Pro to tinker with the 10 Stage Traction Control. Sorry I assumed the OP had that option.

I have the M drive pro but on the x drive its shaded out unless I go to DSC off 2wd (I can not use the traction under MDM)

If I recall from one of the BMW videos this is correct, you need to have DSC off to use the 10 stage TC

In the xdrive if you push the traction button once for MDM you get 4wd sport. Need to go traction completely off to access the 10 stage (if you have the M drive) as others have said.

I'm really surprised some guys are super afraid to turn the traction fully off. That's the fun of driving a rear wheel drive car. By no means do I consider myself an expert. I just take it slow to get to acclimated so I can learn the car and slowly push it more and more every time. That's the beauty of learning your new toy.

My first M car I didn't take them off the first 10k miles. I knew guys in the NYC area that literally powerslide home every day DSC full off. That's STILL not me.

I am with dimab0 here. On the street, I am in DSC on, cause I don't need to drift around street corners, I get much more satisfaction launching off highway on-ramps to 130+ than screeching tires. Also, curbs, cars, and people are things I don't want to interact with physically.
However, on track, I started with DSC off and MDM on 10, 8, 4, and 0 all within a few laps because coming out of a corner - the throttle would be severely limited as the car accelerated at the edge of traction.

I found all but 4 or below to be almost impossible to get the car to slide.

I guess I am getting old, breaking the tires loose in the street doesnt do it for me anymore. I am much more focused on track driving, and getting faster and more comfortable with driving with slip angle around track. Its very challenging to drive with all 4 tires slipping and throttle steering out of corners...

Yep, that's going to be me and getting the car in November, I won't switch tires because I have a daily for that. I'm sure I will get flamed for it but I never switched tires and parked my car when inclement weather hit. Got caught once with summer tires and it won't fun.
