Global Chip Shortage Continues

It appears we may see chip shortages well into 2022, possibly into 2023. Also to consider, continuing chip shortage is expected to keep chip prices climbing. Climbing chip prices combined with low supply of new cars relative to demand for foreseeable future... we may not see "reasonable" G80 prices for some time. Used car prices leveled out in August, but some analysts are expecting another hike in the September numbers.

Reuters reporting that White House announced a chip and auto manufacturer conference. Attendees are Intel, Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, GM, Ford, BMW, Stellantis, Micron Tech Inc.

Bloomberg reporting chip demand remains high and chip delivery time continues to grow (graph below).

WSJ reporting BMW CEO said chip shortage critical for another year. VW CEO thinks chip shortage will last years.

(FYI, I'm in 047 awaiting an allocation)

I made $7K on my Type R, after putting 10K miles on it, and owning it for 2 years.

Absolutely, don't see it going away soon and it continues to affect production at the company I work for.

There are so many factors from the thing that shall not be named (unprecedented times etc etc) which continues to have a knock effect across the entire supply chain from raw materials supply through all the transportation steps (look at the premium on shipping containers and all the stories about heavy goods drivers).

Outside of that fab fires and other recent natural disasters have all impacted things.

As the supply chain then recovers, the big boys will hover up any capacity they can lay their hands on (Apple, Samsung, Sony for PS5s etc).

They can have all the meetings they want at the White House, even if they just focus on opening up new chip fabs (ignoring all the other issues) this is not the work of a moment.

I can well imagine it being 2023/24 before things return to 'normal' suppply & demand status, where these things can be delivered in bulk on a 'JIT' basis (at sensible prices) to any manufacturer that wants them.

Even if they manage to produce the cars, the cost of shipping has gone crazy and you can't get the cars on the ships fast enough, so now we have a ship shortage on top of a chip shortage!

Taking a profit on the car is pointless unless you have a second car you're happy to drive or get your hands on another car else where at MSRP that you'd be happy with

Same with houses, you can sell for a profit now but what are you gonna buy? And where?!

Type R seems to be holding value even in normal circumstances. I'm gonna be honest, I love the way the CTR looks contrary to the public opinion. I would have loved to get my hands on a Limited edition, but the mark ups here in California were just too crazy even before this crazy market.

I'm aware of the chip shortage, but I'm confused as to how used G8Xs are selling for above MSRP? I'm still seeing tons of new ones available for MSRP at multiple dealerships in the southern CA area.

Just wondering if car manufacturers are putting workarounds (or inferior chips) due to this shortage? Will this impact cars in the long run?

I would never pay over MSRP unless it's a special and rare car. In SD you can get a discount if you have good relations with your dealer.

From the other threads, I think you're the only one around here seeing those deals...maybe your fellow Californians should get in contact with you.

They're not MSRP. Call them and you'll see they're going to be charging a mark up.

There is not a single M3 in any configuration available within 50 miles of San Diego. Several used M3's listed over $100K in Socal right now and near zero new inventory unless you are willing to pay $20-25K over.

I called on all of them when I was shopping for mine. $20K+ over sticker for the cars you see at MSRP. Anything that does not have a picture is on a truck somewhere and probably already sold.

I was watching a few used M3's that were $95K+ and all of them are now gone 7 days later.

Yeah, thats crazy, because when I was looking back in July, there were a ton of manuals down in the socal area. All of them were weird colors. Mint Green, Purple, P Blue.

No kidding, and they closed the plant, last month, after making over 45,000 of them, and they still hold value well. I was in Florida, for 2 weeks, back in June, and I located like 16 on the ground, at dealers, and I was going to call around and downbid them against each other. And I just decided to scrap the idea, and get a G82 when I heard the xDrive was coming out, soon.

Shortage of everyone and everything is real - went to Burbank IKEA to get stuff for my daughter's first apartment. Shelves in the self service warehouse are bare

Saw on the news they are paying people $100 to shuttle kids to school in private cars because they can't get bus drivers

Getting worse by the day, it would tke at least 1.5 to 2 years to bring a MFG plan, with current high demand for chips there are no capacities to accommodated with the surge demand. Take time for the semi MFG to produce equipment's with high end customer like Apple and NVidia to name a few would occupied 50% of production lines. The rest of other small companies with low demand won't get the attention.
