I think that you confuse Porsche and BMW designers. BMW ones have shown numerous times their ability to redefine the word ugliness. Their “best” job in that respect is probably the latest 4 coupe and M4, but I’m sure they have even more atrocious designs in prep for future models.

To illustrate this point, have you ever met someone finding a 911 awful? 😉

Actually I have. The GT3 is the cat's meow to me, but I know women who don't think the 911 is a good looking car. I know men who may not necessarily think it's ugly, but they are indifferent about it.

Cool that IND is trying to have solutions for people who don't like the OEM front grill. To me, the IND version looks like a license plate bracket.

Personally, I like the big grill. Especially in person. What really looks bad though, is adding a license plate to it. Especially the euro plate. That looks awful.

Quick fix: paint the bumper strip and bottom half of the grille body-color.

(This is why black is the best color for the G8X.)

Atrocious is a bit harsh and comical, don't you think? Hi, I made that render in 5 minutes on Photoshop and thought it was an improvement. I love the M8, and most would agree it's the best well designed modern BMW. And I think if you poll the car community, more people would want an M8 look compared to the pig snout joke of what we got now.

IND: You're free to use my photoshop all you want, please fix what Munich couldn't do. The grills were from an M5 Comp, part number: 51138082107.

On multiple occasions now, BMW has stepped outside of the boundaries of safe automative design into the unforgiving white space to achieve aggressive business goals and earn outsized brand equity and loyalty.

Porsche has literally taken the opposite approach to move their brand forward. It's a solid if unexciting/uninspiring way to satisfy their customer base. They're excellent at remixing their #1 hit, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Ultimately, I think this thread will be fun to look back in 3-5 years. I predict that most will come around, but if they don't, it's all good. As a current owner enjoying the novelty of BMW's latest 9-figure design, the fewer of these cars on the road, the better.

Yes, I’m sure IND’s in-house designers and engineers are DYING to use your 5 min Photoshop.

And the 8/M8 are so “well designed” that BMW dealerships have to blow them out at 17% discounts. It’s so well designed that rumors are it will be discontinued all together. Meanwhile...good luck getting a AMG GT63. Those two cars next to each other makes the M8 look extremely dated.

Nobody wants a $100k+ coupe that looks like it belongs in the early 2000s. BMW is learning the hard way.

Sheesh whatever man, I didn't even reinvent the wheel, just had some fun with the computer, and IND is good company so it was just a nice comment to give them but alright I guess.

The M8 is a failure because it's overpriced for a car that frankly isn't that special. No reason to spend that much when you can get a Porsche or AMG GTS for that price. Looks, it was overwhelmingly loved, but again beauty is in the eye of the beholder. GT63, I understand why some like it, but man it just doesn't look great to me because I don't like 4 door coupes at all.

I personally think it's more brand lineage, how you can see how the cars progress in design. Then again, if you want a wacky and unique design you can go buy some junk Maserati for $100k and have fun with that lmao.

I am one of those men. Porsche 911 and cayman exteriors are generally ugly to me.

However i wouldn't mind having one for performance reasons, but aesthetically, no no.

Yes. The M8 is boring and looks like it belongs in the early 2000s. In fact it’s silhouette is Mustang if you squint at it in certain lighting. I’m only 1 of 10000 others who have taken notice of this including big automotive publications.

Also there’s a pretty easy solution to the “each time I read your posts” thing...

TimmyM56 yes, it’s over priced because nothing about the design says $150k car.

Park this thing next to an Aston Martin Vantage or even a $60k entry level Corvette and ask someone to point out the $150k cars. Give me a break.

If you want to argue that it’s “understated” then that’s awesome. Only problem is no one wants understated in that category. And the sales reflect that. It’s a product that shouldn’t exist.

The M8 is a svelte sexy car and I'd love to own one, but I don't think $160k sexy. The regular 8's didn't excite me quite as much though as I think the M spoiled it for me.

I've come to the conclusion that there's no fixing these kidney grills.

The whole front bumper needs to be re-Designed to fix the situation of needed air in-take. BMW Exterior Designers should've kept the cool Power Dome Hood with scoops/vents!

Unfortunately the front exterior design looks like a combination of a BMW and a Dodge Charger which makes NO sense and has no BMW brand lineage.

BMW designed g80/g82 around the grille. Hopefully LCI will fix it.

Aftermarket mods are only bringing more attention to the grill which is the last thing it needs.

The best solution is to get a black car.
