A bittersweet allocation

I finally got my allocation!

Unfortunately they locked in the spec I put in three months ago to get on the waitlist. I wasn't sure about the specs at the time, but they assured me I'd have plenty of time to make changes before it goes into production.

Even as of yesterday they told me it's safe to sign the contract with the old specs in place and we can change before production. Today I was told it was all locked in for production and I can't change anything.

Most notably I wanted to switch from RWD to xDrive (reviews for xDrive weren't out three months ago) and I'm just not excited about the order.

What would you guys do? ...drop the car, feel like a jerk, and wait all over again...or....take a car you're not excited about.

What status does it formally show in the MyBMW tracker? If it is in production begins, then they are correct and it can no longer be modified. If it is in order received or scheduled for production, it can still be modified.

While it would suck to start over and wait for another allocation, for the amount of money being spent on these vehicles I wouldn't go through with it unless it was the exact spec you are wanting.

Either way, it's supremely obnoxious and unprofessional of your dealer not to have confirmed the order before placing it-- *especially* after telling you you'd have the opportunity to modify the build. I've never heard of that.

Exactly. It sounds like it is on them. I'd just walk out of it right now and have them make it right. You might not have the car you want for another 6 months or so, but damn, $80k+ is too much for almost being there...

I would not move forward with a spec I'm not fully excited about. It sucks but you're just going to end up regretting not getting the car you wanted. Especially after waiting this long. Talk to the dealer and see if you can make something happen

Agree with everyone here — dont order a car you're not thrilled about.

Fwiw, I am stoked for my incoming RWD M3, and chose it over the x-drive. Don't let reviews sway you one way or another.

Maybe the dealer can trade that allocation/car with an unsubmitted allocation at another dealer so you don't have to wait for yours to get a new one who knows when?

On board with everyone here. I would not proceed with an order that I'm not excited about, especially not with a $70K plus vehicle.

I personally am looking at possibly selling 3 of my cars, two which are paid off to go all in on a dream M3 Comp XDrive. You better believe I'm going to order exactly what I want Having an AWD M3 in Alaska is a game changer. It'd be a year round daily driver. The wife would take the X5 I have on order.

Good luck with whatever you decide and I hope you get what you want!

As other said, don't take this car.
Yo have to be sure you are ok with the build, otherwise you may regret and these are not cheap cars.

If BMW made a 2022 RWD M4 convertible, I would have ordered an M4 RWD convertible instead of the M4 Competition convertible . My previous two M4 convertibles were just fine as RWD top down local cruisers. M4 is not a daily driver for my spouse or me.

Your change isnt something comestic like a laser light. I would not move forward with this build and find a different allocation. Its going to be another long wait but this huge blunder on a $80k purchase.

Thanks

At 44 years old, this is the first car I've ever ordered so I thought I just had the wrong expectations when this went down, but sounds like it's not the case.

Sucks to pass on it and I feel bad for the sales guy (I like him...a really good guy, just an honest mistake on their part)...but I'm pretty confident this isn't the car. It wasn't just the xDrive either. I changed my mind on exterior/interior. It wouldn't have been a dealer breaker if any one or two things were wrong, but allllll of them add up to meh.

I suppose the silver lining is that I get to think about the 50th anniversary options in the next build. If I have an option for Imola under $5k, you better believe I'm taking it.

As for xDrive, I've had a DD RWD 335i for years in Boston and it was a ton of fun. I thought xDrive would take away from that and I didn't know RWD mode had a traction control option with M Drive Pro...now that I know those things, xDrive is the way to go for me.

I didn't even get there. Allocation came in Tuesday, I let them know I changed my mind on the options. They responded with no worries, we can change later. I signed the paperwork Wednesday night and the next afternoon I get an email saying sorry, we can't change the build from the original one because it's going into production Dec 14th. I thought it was weird, but I've never been through this so part of me thought that's how this works and I was just being too picky/entitled.

I'm not trying to throw anyone under the bus. Good sales guy, good dealership, honest mistake. But totally not how I wanted my first ever car order to go.

Dealers are getting allocation for future months. Either they had this allocation for a different client and he backed out or they traded this with a different dealership for another vehicle. Someone wasnt paying attention to the build date when this allocation opened up.

They will be able to sell this vehicle without any issues unless it had unique combinations, so you dont have to feel bad for your sales guy.

I see.

Definitely wouldn't take that allocation/car and for their mix up they should be making sure you are number one on their list for their next allocation.

Don't feel bad for them, when it shows up they'll be asking for +10K over MSRP. The problem I see is maybe being uncomfortable if you want to order the new one from the same guys. You seem to like doing business with them. Customer is always right though, they'll be ok.

I was able to get someone else's build and it will be here somewhat soon (built and at port), it's pretty much the spec I would do besides for color. I like the color (bg) but not what I would have picked. This thread has me doubting my decision. 😂

Don’t be a sucker. Just walk out if they don’t change. It’s too expensive to sit with a car you feel crappy about.

111 or 112 can still be locked if there are individual options (e.g., fjord blue interior, individual aluminum trim). There will be a hard lock date once that order is accepted (usually only a few days).
