Thank you all for the kind words and for the encouragement, definitely helps in times like this to share with fellow enthusiasts. I still have no clue what hit the front of my car to cause this much damage....but guess impact at 70MPH is no small hit. As of now, the insurance damage adjuster is going to see the car on Monday 2/26 and then call me to go over estimate. The shop has pulled some codes so far and the errors are AC condenser lines, coolant, and they are going to be tearing off the front bumper today to take a closer look at the damages. Keeping fingers crossed it is not worse.

That sucks. All in all though, that’s why we have insurance, and it’s not a total loss. Glad you’re ok, and it’s being taken care of.

Sorry to hear this OP. This is heartbreaking and my thoughts go out to you.

Hang in there - the car will be repaired + back to new.

And you'll have a story to tell.

Dude, that sucks! You did everything right, and I’m sure you’ll have the car back soon enough in perfect shape. Go rent a cool car to get your mind off of it.

This reminds me of a couple interesting events I had when living in so cal back in 2000-2004. It’s a danger zone out there. First was my 323 coupe when I ran over something and duct taped the bumper as I didn’t have the $ to fix. Second was in Beverly Hills when a lady in a V12 Mercedes hit me and they paid cash for the $1700 in repairs. As I recall her husband was drinking scotch and smoking a cigar at the time while his wife was driving. Third was between West Hollywood and Bel Air when someone smashed into the car next to us at 40 mph - I was in my 330 convertible (5 speed manual!) and we had the top down. That was loud and scary. I ended up totaling that car during a hurricane after moving back to Atlanta - freak accident but no one was hurt. Turned that into my first M3 - E46 manual.

So don’t beat yourself up. Cars can be fixed. Could have been a lot worse. Glad you’re ok!

Repair Estimates

Hey guys wanted to provide an update. Good news is that insurance confirmed the incident as 'Act of Nature' and so it is confirmed that I am not found at fault as a comprehensive claim. The insurance company also did a full recorded interview with me and had to submit proof and timestamped photos showing that this was in no way some sort of insurance fraud since I reported the claim the same day that I bought the car.

Car is at body shop and both the shop and insurance adjuster went to look at it yesterday and found the total damages to be $22K...

Front bumper, grill, left headlight, radiator, air conditioning condenser, fender linings, resonator, cooling fan to name a few....all this caused by what the shop thinks was a block of wood

Here is to hoping no parts are on backorder and estimated time frame to get the car repaired and complete is 12 business days once all the parts arrive. Couple pictures attached to show the damage with the front bumper off....

That's one hell of a bill, and I'm glad you got it sorted with your insurance.

Might be a great time to work in a grille mod, if that was in the plans!

Speaking of wood, I was in my truck last week, and a dump trailer was in the left lane, and a sheet of plywood came flying up at me at 75mph. I barely missed it, but the damage would have been substantial if I had hit it.

damn, definitely a Code Brown moment. Glad insurance is covering it and hoping there aren't any backorders on parts.

Once when I was in college I was driving in the mountains. I saw what looked like an empty cardboard box in the middle of the road (one of those 18" boxes). My first thought was how fun it would be to hit the box... and then I decided against it at the last minute, only to drive by it and realize it was a hunk of granite...

Unless it’s lens distortion, that oil cooler looks warped as well.

For those of you that live in California, CalTrans: California Department of Transportation is responsible for keeping the public freeways clear of potholes and debris. Anyone can submit claims for up $12,500. Since insurance is covering majority of my repairs, I am going to submit a claim for the deductible & Uber ride that I took. Link below for more details and attached the PDF file incase anyone ever needs it!

Unfortunately for me, it ended up being a busy intersection and I was trying to pull the car off the side of the road and car lost all power. I immediately jumped out of the car and looked at the front end and my heart sank to my stomach. !

Why would you claim this incident with the state? This is why you have insurance and they are covering the incident.

I wonder if insurance companies try to subrogate against this program.

Great Q. I bet it’s not too difficult to find out in the law that was passed to create this program.

Oh my… so sorry this happened to you! It could’ve been worse and just be glad nothing else happened to you. As what a lot of people already mentioned, this can be fixed, but do feel your heartache for having something so new get damaged so soon. Keep your head up and let us know what happens with the insurance company and repairs.

Dang
Makes me sad for you.
I tend to be so defensive driving, esp at my age—- been around the horn for some decades.
This reinforces my bit of paranoia

Ya, I get that.

Why does the OP think the state of CA is responsible for some random object that fell onto the road? Reading the OPs post, the object could have fallen off seconds before he struck it. Could the object have been there long enough that a reasonable person would expect Cal DOT (or whatever it’s called) to have cleaned it up - sure. But it’s certainly common for something to fall onto the roadway and get knocked to the edge of the road pretty quickly.

I would be surprised if the state paid the claim but it’s California so who knows.

Agree. It looks like the use case on their website is damage caused by a pothole in the road. I think going after whoever didn’t secure their load would be more likely, but finding them is also likely impossible. Even if they found the plate of whoever dropped it, proving who was driving is another distinct impossibility.

Hoping and praying that the OP finds peace and car is fixed. I feel bad for any diminished value on the car due to the incident on the way home.

Hi - you did bring up valid points, guess it was just another resource that I found and wanted to share with fellow forum members. I am taking my shot to try to recover from some of the mental turmoil.....right or wrong who knows but I will be at peace with whatever the decision ends up being by the state. I would regret not having filed it knowing there might have been a slight chance in getting some money back from Commifornia
