G80 M3 vs G82 M4

Im thinking about buying a new car and Im sold on either the g80 or g82. I dont necessarily need the 4 doors and Im interested a coupe, so Im leaning towards the m4, but I like the looks of the m3 better than the m4 and I dont like the m4 rectangular reverse light and how they put the reverse light right in the middle of the brake light. (I like the tailights of the m3 more than the m4) Also, I was speccing both of them to see which one I like more, and I added the exterior carbon package on the m3 and m4, is the m3 carbon diffuser is partially carbon or is it partially matte carbon and partially high gloss carbon? Whereas the m4 carbon diffuser is full carbon (I added pictures of my final specc for both of them and would like to see which one you like more).

Reasons why Im considering the G82:
⋅Coupe
⋅Has 4 seats, same as the m3, so Im not losing any seats if I go for the m4.
⋅ The exterior carbon fiber option is better on m4 than m3.

Reasons why I dont like the G82:
⋅ The m4 is elevated a little too much, probably would lower it a little if I purchase it.
⋅Dont like the tailights

Reasons why I like the G80:
⋅Better looks than the m4
⋅Already low to the ground
⋅Like the tailights of the m3 compared to m4

Reasons why I dont like the m3:
⋅Not a coupe, which is what Im interested in

Final speccs of bot cars:

They’re both badass man.

Are you specing carbon buckets?

If you are I’d lean towards suggesting the m4 since it’s a lot easier to get in and out of.

Also when you drop an m4 and put some spacers on they look dramatically better.

M3 does look better in some senses without a doubt.

You can also get gts tails for an m4 relatively cheap and they look very nice.

As much as I want the carbon seats, Im trying to keep it under 100k, and with so many options, there isn't room for the carbon seats. I really like the gts taillights tho, thank you. Nice M4!

Obviously am bias as I'm the 2-door-car man all the way, but here are some highlight points of 2-doors over 4s:
- 4-doors is a sport sleeper and easily flying under radar. 2 doors is very obviously sport car and there is no mis-look about it.
- It takes almost half time to wash a 2s over 4s (from my experience every week)
- The best of all, if you want to get a girl in, 2-doors is a must

Minor point about the doors:

The M4 is easier to get in and out of IF you have enough room where you regularly park to actually open the longer doors far enough. My M3 is easier to deal with in my garage with my SO's car also in the garage than my M2C was.

Can you elaborate? Didn't think there was a difference.

OP - I don’t think there’s a difference between the amount of carbon between the G80 and G82. The major differences is obviously the body style (2 v 4 doors) and the idrive 7 v 8 assuming you’re looking at 2023 models of each.

Good luck!

A lot of the things you point to in terms of likes and dislikes seem fairly minor and not things that would sway most buyers one way or the other versus something much more significant, like a coupe vs. sedan.

My advice is to focus your energy on deciding whether you want a 2-door coupe or a 4-door sedan, and hinge your decision on that.

Although I went with the G80, I'm thinking you should go with the G82 because it sounds like what you really want is a coupe.

It sounds like your comparison of the looks matched up with my thoughts before I purchased my G80. I love the car but I will say that I’ve really grown to love the look of the G82 after seeing all the amazing builds on this site.

I have a family and need 4 doors, but if I didn’t and wanted to save some money, I’d go with the G82. Carbon buckets were a non negotiable for me but I understand if you want to keep costs down and if the car isn’t going to see the track. Either way, I don’t really think you can go wrong here.

Think of it this way… if you got an M4, how would you feel pulling up next to an M3 in real life? Would you be envious or would you be happy with the choice you made?

Good luck with your purchase!

Could someone who has driven both compare the driving characteristics between the M3 and M4 (both xDrive)? Will the M4 have a stiffer body? Another chassis tuning?

Thanks!

They are the same car. Doors and styling are the only differences.

FWIW I specifically asked 2 instructors at the M School in Thermal what their preference was and they both preferred the M3, with both saying they thought it handled slightly better - although they weren't sure why that would be the case.

That said, I drove the M4 and now own an M3 and I wouldn't be able to sense any difference in handling or overall performance between the two. I think if there were any differences, only a skilled instructor who is tracking them both day in and day out would be able to tell. For the rest of us, I can't imagine anyone feeling any noticeable difference. Certainly nothing that would warrant selecting one over the other.

I got the M3 simply because I like the looks and I wanted 4 doors.

Thanks for the reply,

what about xdrive vs rwd comparison? Someone claims that there is no difference (xdrive in 2WD mode), but someone claims that xdrive is simply always rubberier on the steering wheel.

I've only really driven the RWD M4 Competiton but I'd rather have the M3 xdrive but I'm afraid the ride would be just as engaging. I also drove an M3 touring, but it wasn't the same there anymore, the weight is definitely to blame, but I don't know if the xdrive as well.

Thanks!

Ya know, I think the M4 Comps I drove at the M School were RWD, but I honestly don’t even remember at this point.

Regardless, from someone who overthinks things, I think you’re probably overthinking things. 😁

Given the minor cost difference, added traction, relatively minor weight gain, and flexibility to go either AWD or RWD, I don’t think there’s any reasonable argument to go RWD at this point.

Unless you want a manual of course, which is what I did.

I definitely think about things, sometimes too much.

I would also take a manual transmission, but due to the part of city driving, an automatic will be more comfortable, just as an xdrive will be suitable for our winter.

I'll think about it some more. Thanks a lot for the answers.

Let's just say I didn't need a 4 door car as I have other vehicles and I am historically a coupe loving person but when it came to these, I had to go the M3 route for 2 main reasons. One being I like the looks of the M3 and wide body at the back way more than the M4 and second M3 is significantly rarer (at least where I am) than the M4. For example, I had the option of one M3 on the lot (happenstance as the person who ordered it couldn't purchase it) and 4 M4's ready to take my pick. For someone like me who goes through cars relatively quickly, the rarity aspect bodes better for value retention.

Finally, M3 is an icon, the name itself is an icon and has significant history attached to it. So I wanted that as well.

They are both cool but I prefer the M4, slightly lowered with a little more aggressive offset I think it looks better than the M3 modded the same way. If you need 4 doors I get it, but my 6 and 4 year olds fit fine in their boosters in the M4 when I choose to drive it.
