Despite working in hardware engineering at a cell phone manufacturer for 10 years I have failed to convince her otherwise.

I had the original iPhone, then started skipping generations so I went : iPhone 3GS 4S 6S I sold each previous gen phone, wiped and jailbroken, for ~$300. So this upgrade will likely cost me a bit more due to having to buy new chargers and such but will still be < $1,000. It's gotten longer and longer between upgrades as I'm not really a heavy user aside from forums, texting, general social media. That being said, I've still managed to burn through 814 GB of data so far this month on cellular data (I've hit over 1TB before several times) and I'm on my phone maybe 8-10 hours a day according to my screen time tracker. So perhaps "intensive" is a better word than "heavy" (ie, I'm not doing video editing, film making, etc). (Also, thank you AT&T for unlimited everything plans). To me, the increase in storage, battery life, screen quality, camera quality, and 5G when in certain locations is why I'll be upgrading, likely to the mini because I hate the "phablet" trend. I like being able to type the full keyboard with one thumb, and I don't throw my phone into a purse or my back pocket, it sits in my front pocket so past a certain size it just digs into me when I sit down. I thought the 4S was the perfect size, begrudgingly got used to the 6S size, and absolutely refuse to get a phone I can't even hit half the screen on one-handed. I have an iPad if I want that, and it's primarily the bedside / bathtub reader. |

I spun the conversation into nasal sprays instead and she was like "oh ok cool I guess I could do that" but I was aghast that she was a dental resident and claimed a wide network of medical professionals yet still believed there were microchips in vaccines and refused to even get a flu shot on that basis... |

Normally I'd just be a sarcastic dick and ask questions like "Oh really? So the microchip tracks you? Why would they need that though when your phone already does that? Also how do they recharge the microchip? Can they put the microchip in your butt? So many questions Bill Gates should really be answering" And this is why I needed marriage counseling.

Now add that she is very sensitive and slightly dramatic - and any minor thing she feels like she is going to die. My mom (doctor) refuses to give her any medical advice. Last time told me not to call her with any medical questions and made a comment that she hates patients like her |

I get a new one every year for "testing" purposes. As a CTO and still technical lead for the programming team, it's only fair I test on the latest hardware to be sure.

Same with tech in cars, I find it funny when people say things like wow the tech in the G80 is amazing and makes the F80 outdated. There hasnt been any new tech in cars since the navigation screen and bluetooth. Carplay and android auto have also made in car tech useless.

My friend is an engineer for apple and gets 15% off, so I'll be getting the 12 pro to replace my 8 plus that I've had for 3 years. The battery is starting to crap out and my charging port/earbud port is going out. It's time for an upgrade for me. Hopefully it'll last me at least another 3 years.
