BMW might have a 5 Series Power eDrive hybrid like that running already (emphasis Bimmerpost's):

"The total output comes to at least 670 bhp, with over 1,000Nm torque (737 lb-ft). *If* it made production in this form, this would be the most powerful BMW production powertrain ever!"

I dunno about that and not sure I'd jump on it...

That said it is the way of the future now. If they did AWD, and mainly carbon structure this thing could FLY.

The downside is it will be immensely expensive, far more than the current generation.

I suspected when the F80 came out that my current E93 M3 would be my last BMW. This has confirmed it.

With BMW going the modular route, I see an improvement in reliability. This is the technology that we see on the 918, LaFerrari, and P1. For BMW to offer this on a car that is 1/4 of those in terms of price is amazing. Can't wait for a Carbon Core M3!

This I could get into, especially if there is an AWD-light drivetrain. It rains too much here for 400+ HP RWD.

I'm interested to know how much horsepower the electric motors would add. Is the M3 going to get another minor bump in horsepower? 450? 480? The M3 struggles to get all the power down as is, I think the next step is to introduce some form of AWD.

Yep, and this makes me even more glad I'm getting a GT4. I'm sure electrified performance can be fun and I'm also sure there won't be any alternative before too much longer, but I'm going to enjoy NA gas-only power as long as I can, by which time electric cars will only have gotten better.

Nothing will come close to the e92 V8! 😕 I'm a bit of a purist. It just ain't the same. ..that V8 rumble. ...aaaaaah.. and then an ESS VT2 supercharger on top and we're in Ferrari territory! Now give me a naturally aspirated V8 with a hybrid drivetrain and I'm all ears 😎

with a huge push for more environmental friendly engines. one would think that the old style engines would be sought after.

my problem is that i see gas become more expensive, and at some point not available at a mass level like it is today.

this generation went turbo, next goes electric and turbo, next goes full electric.

This is the layout for the current Acura RLX Hybrid and it is decidedly not sporting.

def no surprise here, seeing the way BMW has moved.
as much as I love the NA M engines, it's old and we gotta accept it
and we know electric hybrid will be more efficient + perform better than FI engines for sure.

As long as the engine is or is bigger than a 4 banger. I'm not ready to drive a glorified Prius if not
