Clunking into 1st gear, from rear diff??
This winter I have a new noise that sounds horrible. On my manual transmission, if from stop position I turn right (like at a stop sign), there is a clunking / grinding noise coming maybe from rear as I let the clutch out. Once car is rolling and clutch out, no noise. It only happens when turning right. What could this be?
It’s significantly worse after the car stands outside in the cold (30 degree F) for a few hours or more. I was guessing maybe rear differential, but don’t understand why it would happen only while I’m letting clutch out. Once the car warms up, all noise is gone. Maybe related to some cold transmission or diff fluid? Dealer said there’s no error codes and no issue. But I suspect they didn’t look closely enough. What can I check? Anyone else have this? |

At least, I was able to rule out that this has nothing to do with letting clutch out. Heard this noise as well turning at very slow speed (under 5mph) while already in 1st gear.

I came across two possibly related threads. There is some chance this is normal-ish, but I'm reluctant to accept that just yet since this is my 3rd winter with the car and first time hearing this noise anywhere near this severity.

I convinced the dealer to change the rear differential fluid. So far I think that has resolved all of my clunking noises. The car has about 30k miles on it.
