Track Day Tires- what do folks run?

Curious what folks run that drive to track on same tire. The Pilots were way over matched but don’t want to tow and run Hoosiers. Any other good tires that fit on stock xdrive rims?

No direct experience, but Cup 2R seem to be the go-to for track tires that are still street legal. You probably wouldn't want to run them all the time, as they have <4,000 miles of tread life on the street and will throw rocks all over your paint, but with 2 sets of wheels it'd be an easy swap before you head to the track.

I've run the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3's for a few track days now and absolutely refuse to go back to my Michelin MPS4S (non-star spec). However, given that you are on stock wheels and xDrive, you will want to stick to the stock sizes or +10mm in section width or so. Goodyear hasn't had any stock that fits the OEM sizes for quite some time now.

The best options are probably the Yokohama AD09's or some version of the MPSC2's. Unfortunately you are quite limited by stock wheel sizes and current actual available tyre stock in the USA. If you are serious about tracking several times a year, it couldn't hurt to run a dedicated set of 19's for more serious rubber while using the MPS4S for daily purposes.

Yes prepared to buy another set of rims and tires that can drive to track. If looks questionable at all will leave on stock hardware.
So rims and tires that fit without major mods or major spacers with tread wear like 80 to 140 range. Want something that gets me those extra few seconds and only use for track. Thanks

What size wheels and tires?

I personally went from P-zeros to Cup 2 Connect (Star) - major improvement. They hold up well on track and are designed for BMW. Someone else (in another thread) said that the Cup 2R have a hero lap and then fall off, so not sure if that's a better option.

Apex has an excellent G80 fitment guide where they list various wheel/tire fitments. I almost went with the Apex VS-5RS wheels, but decided to remain on OEM wheels. From my research so far, it seems Nitto NT01 and Nankang AR-1 should fit the OEM wheels. I heard Nankang run narrow, so it would have to be 285/305 I believe.

New to the forum:

I'm also looking for some tire & track pad suggestions. I'm going to be tracking my M4 X-Drive for the first time in October. Just bought a set of Apex VS-5RS 19X10 ET-12, planning on running a 285 square setup. Car is sitting on KW HAS with Millway camber plates (front camber 3.0, rear 2.0), otherwise the car is stock. I've been tracking my 04 M3 for the past 9 years, but the gearbox is currently being rebuilt so i thought it would be a good opportunity to try out the M4. I'm looking for feed back from fellow members with significant track experience with G8X platform. I have extensive experience running NT-01 and RS-4, but have also run Dirrezza ZIII and RE-71R over the years on the M3.

for track pads, I normally run Pagid RS29 with a Stoptech Trophy BBK front/rear on my M3 which weighs 2800lbs. Since this car being significantly heavier I'm thinking of either running the Pagid RS29 or trying the Carbotech XP10 front/rear. Any real world feedback would be appreciated.

The M4 will be towed to the track so I'm not worry about driving the car home, just looking to have a fun two days at the track and bringing the car home in one piece.

I think the best options for our cars now are

RE71RS in 285/35/19
Nankang CRS V2 in 295/30/19
Goodyear S3R in 285/35/19 or 305/30/19

All square setup

I’m running the RE71RS with a 10.5 inch wheels and they fit nicely, 10 inch is cutting it close but it might work

If I towed it would be Hoosiers all day.

Looks like square setup may be best way to go. How much a lap did folks pick up from P4s?

Yes Cup 2s have best lap on 2nd lap usually and they burn quick. But had them on vettes for years on z06s and they worked well

How do the RE-71RS hold up over two days on the track? Any tread life left?

Love the boldness of the Hoosiers! But 40tw tires on a 4000lb car probably wouldn't last the two day i need them too. The Cup 2s unfortunately don't come in a 285, otherwise it would be solid choice on my list of possible tires.

I saw someone mention Nankang. I know that the Apex Nurburgring crew runs them and has had good success. They were on the 230i that I drove there this summer and they felt really good.

I have around 5 sessions each 20 mins on the tire and plenty of life left. These can probably last me 4-5 track days if temps are not too high. They can definitely hold up to 2 days if tracking, but I run quite an aggressive alignment with -3+ front neg. camber. YMMV

Have you read the Grassroots Motorsports tire test article. they don't evaluate the Ad09, but they do evaluate most of the popular 200twm, 100tw & R-Comps.

Excellent article and links. Thanks
Looks like square Supercar tires are way to go on new rimes or stock rims and cup 2s

I'm currently running ANRKY S1-X1's in 20x10 and 20x11. Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3's are 285/30/20 and 305/30/20 respectively. KW V3's are set fairly high but within KW's spec, and I'm experiencing rubbing on undulating roads in the passenger side rear and rubbing up front while reversing. These Goodyears run wide and definitely are not 285/305, so I'm not surprised by the rubbing. Still - not giving them up and will not go back to the MPS4S I got the G80 on Pirelli's then went with normal MPS4S for the aftermarket wheels, and now I'm hooked (heheheh) on the SC3's.

Since you're xDrive, I'd heavily lean into a square set of wheels/tyres. Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R, Nankang AR-1/CR-S, Yokohama AD09, Falken Azenis RT660 are all tyres I can easily recommend based on some extensive research.

When it comes down to tyres for me, I look for grip but also look for steering communication/feeling. While the steering of the G8X remains a bit vague at the limit (despite spherical bearings, KW V3's, etc.), having tyres that communicate well and give me confidence is important. The tyres I've listed above communicate well, make excellent track day tyres that last a decent amount and are friendly to the wallet. The only toss up is the AD09 as it's relatively new and hasn't been put through its paces yet. I've seen a few videos of a Cayman GT4 and a few other track enthusiasts that have enjoyed the AD09 over the MPSC2 and other competitors such as the Ventus RS4. I have not included the RE-71RS because it was reported by both Tire Rack and Tyre Reviews to not provide the best feedback - so it's a no-go for me. MPSC2's are too expensive and just not worth it for me; I got a puncture in my tyre that blew it out badly while on the SC3's and replacing it only cost $300. If I were on the MPSC2, it would've cost $550 or whatever, no thanks lol

Narrowed it down to super car R as likely favorite with 285/35/19 square setup as should clear no rub issues and tons of tread width vs stock
Nankang and Falcon in square may also be in the cards and likely all 19 inch square option all around.

Appears Supercar tires only ever available in 305/30/19 consistently. Can they fit in our wheel wells with the right size and offset wheels?
The RE71RS seem available often also.
I saw Hoosier doesn’t even make our sizes as was debating can I load extra set of track tires in my G82 and change to R7s at track
