Anyone run 89 gasoline in our s58 engines? How about running 87?
If so, please let me know your results and if you've had any issues doing so. Out here in CA, gas prices are absolutely BRUTAL. The closest gas station to me is literally charging over $7 for 91 octane (I know, this is a major outlier, but still....) |

Do not down grade the octane. This can cause problems with detonation (boom) in the engine. The motor is very expensive. Buy the 91 octane. Also consider a 4cyl car for daily use. If too expensive, you may consider selling the car. I live in Texas, also known as a great state, so I don’t worry about such things and run 93 all day. |

Maybe there is an option for OP to mix 30% E85 and 87. I have no idea. I know some of these tuners add 30% E85 to 93 to get higher octane. I think* it hurts fuel economy, regardless. Like others have stated, buying an M - you just factor in that insurance, gas, etc - will be more. |

Is the risk-reward worth it? Probably not.

You can add 2.5gal of E85 to 12gal of 89octane to make 91octane E23. You don’t want to increase ethanol% beyond 25% on a stock or gas tune, especially if you race, otherwise you’ll be fine.
I would not run 87o plus E85 since you would only increase to 89o and still have thinned fuel (more alcohol = more fuel volume needed).

If you're going to run 87 then don't go full throttle, just cruise. The ecu keeps track of how often you put in junk gas

Are these gas prices normal to CA or do you live in a remote area?

As others have said as long as your not getting into boost at all it SHOULD be fine. This really should have been a factor in your budget before getting into a car like this, cheaping out on basic things like gas can have a larger long term negative consequence.

https://www.losangelesgasprices.com/index.aspx?fuel=C Let's say you're paying closer to normal prices. I don't know LA for squat so let's use gas buddy, sort for only name brand stations, and then pick one station in the middle: https://www.losangelesgasprices.com/...o&tme_limit=24 I grabbed this Arco in Torrance for grins and giggles: https://www.losangelesgasprices.com/...985/index.aspx So we have credit 87 at $4.25 and credit 91 at $4.55 That seems a little close, so I chose another to give 87 a fair shot: https://www.losangelesgasprices.com/...347/index.aspx 87 credit is $4.29 and 91 credit is $4.65 ok, so $0.36 / gallon. Let's say you are driving a G80 Comp XD and have a lead foot and average 16 MPG in the car. That's the city rating. Now let's say you drive 10,000 miles a year. So... 10,000 miles / year / 16 miles / gallon = 625 gallons per year consumed. At a difference of $0.36 / gallon, that's $225 saved per year by driving 87. That's $18.75 / month. Skip three starbucks orders and you've paid for your gas upgrade to 91 / month. Just don't do it. I'll give you an example near me. The delta between 87 and 93 is bigger. At an Exxon station here in The Woodlands, it's $2.49 for 87, and $3.59 for 93. So $1.10 / gallon. That's still only $687 / year using the same specs. $57 / month. Cancel your Hulu subscription and treat your car right. I could see burning 87 if you were doing a LOT of miles. But then....why would you have purchased an G8X for that? |
