Drone at 1k rpm

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Car has about 2200km on it and just started to notice this drone noise whenever I am off the gas and the engine is slowing the car down. Noise happens right as you are descending to 1k rpm. Sounds like a drone noise and it coincides with some resistance from either the engine, transmission or brakes.

Anyone else have this?

My groans unbecomingly when engine lugs. It's almost a grinding noise. Doesn't sound right.

Yes it's a groan. Not sure if the engine is lugging though, it's just when I slow down and the rpm is around 1k. The transmission dosent shift down either. Not sure why it's programmed to not shift if the result is that nasty groaning sound.

I read your post again. Mine makes noise when I am on throttle, not off throttle like you. Mine makes this weird groaning/grinding noise on very light throttle applications at the very bottom of a gear - so like if you're in 3rd or 4th with RPMs below 1500 and you give it light gas, it will groan/grind until you get to 1500rpm or 1700rpm or so.

Just bumping this. Just curious if this is a characteristic of the drivetrain before i waste a trip to the dealer. Started to happen after my break in service and it's best described as a done or humming when i am decelerating (coasting) to around 1k rpm and at low speeds without any throttle. It's very quiet but, i can only hear it without the radio on and it sounds almost like a friction or rubbing and it does vibrate the wheel at high frequency. When it happens and i shift down it goes away (not touching the throttle) so probably not brake or diff related.

Any ideas?

I have the same issue with my car (M3 G80 2021 RWD). It bothers me so much that I want to trade it in for a new car. When I was allowed to test drive a brand new car (xdrive) yesterday, I noticed that it also makes this noise. So I think it's normal and that some people just don't notice or mind.

That is unfortunate. I have since looked under the car and spent about a half hour checking all components of the exhaust that I could and found nothing amiss (though I am not an expert in this arena).

I'm just learning to ignore it. Have you taken yours in yet? I have not but if I decide to do so, I will post what they say.

Yes, I have already been to the dealer several times about this, also to different ones. None of them could solve the problem permanently. In the end, BMW said that these are normal noises and that comparable vehicles also make this noise.

For me, it barely happens if I'm in D2 or D3. How about you?

I only drive in D1 until the car is warmed up or if I'm in heavy city traffic so I can mostly avoid it. I had a client in my car the other week and the noise happened and he definitely had a WTF was that look on his face.

I use the vehicle every day to go to work and drive mostly in the city. The sound can be clearly heard and I get a slight feedback through the steering wheel. It happens only in the range of 1300 - 1600 rpm. If I accelerate slowly and I pass through that range I can hear it for a second and if the car stays constantly in that range it appears sporadically.

The specialists at the dealer were also able to reproduce it, but none could find the cause.

Back from the dead: Today into work (28° F), I distinctly noticed the vibration around ~1300 RPM. Lately, it's been there in a subtle way, but today it was obvious. I mostly drive in D1, but tomorrow I will try D2 and see if that makes a difference. I suppose I should also put it into 2W and see if that changes anything.

For reference, my car still does it (11,000km now). I assume its just a characteristic of the car. Something to do with the turbo setup?

If its normal I am surprised some of the members with more of an OCD attention to detail haven't made a bigger deal about this.

On the way back from work, took the long way home (where's Roger Hodgson?). Switching to D2/D3 makes no difference and 2W/4W makes no difference. It's always around ~1200 RPM -- I'm convinced it is the engine, not transmission. I'm wondering if it's only noticed by North Americans (CAN/MEX/USA)? Do EU owners talk about it?

Yep that's it. I also think its engine. 1200 rpm every time.

I started experiencing this at around 5000 miles on my 2023 M3CX. Hoping that someone / BMW figures it out, the vibration in particular is disconcerting.

Thanks for sharing. I'm surprised more haven't noticed this given how perceptive M enthusiasts are.

For me, I have noticed it on the colder days. But I'm not sure there is a connection.

Additional data points. The issue does not occur until the oil temperature reaches standard operating temperature (about 210°F). For my commute, that is about 35 minutes after I leave (in the morning). Then it is fairly noticeable while driving around -- but mostly during "off throttle" when the engine (at above 1700 RPM) passes through 1200 RPM.

Secondly, when I arrived back home today, car stationary and in Park, I revved the engine to 3500 RPM, removed my foot from the throttle, as the engine passes through 1200 RPM there is a slight shudder. P.S. Cold or warm, the car idles like a dream, silky smooth.

Does anyone have a video of the sound they are experiencing? I’m having something similar.

-only occurs when the car is warm
-occurs while moving or stationary (both in gear and neutral)
-occurs accelerating or decelerating with foot off gas
-only occurs from 1k-1.8k RPM

I reproduced the sound while stationary. Not entirely clear the source is under the car but the camera picked it up. Don’t really hear it on the engine area.
