Magnetic Shift Paddles

Anyone contemplating or have you gotten magnetic shift paddles? I believe there are only two sets available for the G8X.

The Madtrace Carbon:

https://ind-distribution.com/product...fd25d12d&_ss=r

And the MAED Billet:

https://ind-distribution.com/product...ift-paddle-set

I find (already, car not even broken in) the stock "Carbon fiber" paddles to be pretty naff. My Turbo S and even my wife's Cayenne have nice solid aluminum paddles. Given that, I'm thinking of going with the Evolve billet paddles or going whole hog and getting some magnetic paddles.

https://ind-distribution.com/product...steering-wheel

Has anyone here done the swap? Does the clicking get on your nerves? I don't drive with the paddles often....most of the time I'm in D unless I'm going for a spirited drive. So I wouldn't suspect the clicking would get too annoying. But is it at all bearable?

Thanks.

Got the madtrace. Love em. I put a couple pieces of vinyl between the magnets. Mutes the sound a bit but still has a good"click" and it's quite pleasing tactile feel. I actually also have IOMG painted paddles as well as I wasn't sure if I would like the click but now don't think i would consider changing it out.

I have the jqwerks adjustable version in the ind custom gloss finish. I’m driving in S mode 99% of the time and do not find the clicking annoying at all. Jqwerks did mention that they toned it down somewhat on the revised version. The position adjustments are also very useful, so i would recommend getting that one rather than saving some money on the original, non-adjustable version.

Which units are you referring to? I don't see them on the website. These?

The standard carbon paddles from jqwerks are matte carbon, but IND offers them in a gloss which they do in-house for an upcharge, if you want it to be a closer match to the rest of the carbon in the car.

the original non-adjustable version isn't offered through IND anymore but you can probably find them for around $350 elsewhere.

Got it, thanks.

Hey IND-Distribution, I definitely dig these: https://ind-distribution.com/product...c1480787&_ss=r but not a fan of the bright aluminum. I see that the MAED paddles from Evolve are available in anodized anthracite; anyone do the same with these?

Here is a photo comparing the Titanium finish vs. the Anthracite.

Thanks! Sorry, I'm still a bit confused. Are you saying that the MadTrace billet paddles are available in anthracite finish? Those look like the MAED / Evolve ones

The MAED ones are quite a bit more expensive than even the MadTrace billet ones. Are there any real differences?

Yeah they are the ind modified gloss CF version. I think I got the last set of non-adjustable ones they had in stock
I'll try to get some better pics loaded to this thread soon

The shift paddles in question, both from MAED and MadTrace, are \magnetic and crafted from billet aluminum. While their functionality is similar, they differ in design aesthetics and country of origin.

Regarding the photo attached, those are the MAED shift paddle color options.

Thanks. My question was, do the MadTrace come in different colors? Or just the raw aluminum color?

We can paint MAED or MadTrace, but the MadTrace are only offered by the manufacturer in the hard anodized finish.

Those look EXACTLY like the Mad Trace. Right down to the two sets of paddles. Seriously, those have to be a reverse engineered knockoff, or a supplier cutting out the original manufacturer.

Thanks.
If you only use the paddles for spirited driving then I don't think you'll find the magnetic click annoying, if anything for us it adds a little 'drama' to the occasion.

We were unhappy with the quality and feel of existing products so developed our own through a new brand MAED.

If you haven't seen it already here is a full video on them:

They were designed and are manufactured right here in the UK.

Thanks Matt@Evolve I did see that video. Curious to hear as to what you were unhappy with on existing products that you wanted to / feel like you were able to improve on your product?

I thought I'd like the "carbon fiber" paddles in my car but they are junk plastic, basically. It bugs me that the paddles in my wife's Cayenne, of all things, are nice solid metal paddles. They don't click, but they do make a satisfying "thump" when you pull them.

I think I might be more ok with the click once I tune the transmission. Will seem more appropriate then.

Yes the standard carbon/plastic paddles seemed a good idea in the press release but from the moment we tried them we left feeling pretty disappointed with the cheap and mushy feeling.

We do not think a flat paddle is ergonomically a good design, and prefer the feeling of metal to carbon fibre. We also found the required effort to actuate the paddle was unusually high.

We carried over the design from the Evolve billet paddles with a few tweaks. The contoured rear of the paddle which has a really nice feel and ergonomically works nicely.

Another thing we did is pay attention to tolerances with not only how the product itself assembles, but how it interfaces with the steering wheel. This was to ensure everything felt solid and high quality with no movement other than the paddle actuation itself. The paddle can be pulled from any position top to bottom with no flex.

I do wish these products were less clacky and more thunky. I appreciate the positive click into gear as the OEM paddles lack feedback and do flex. I like the tactile feel of the OEM paddle with the knobbied rubber back, but you can add that experience with a strip of silicon tape linked below. I drive OEM paddles and these regularly and have increasingly enjoyed the improvement. The other thing I did was fill in the +/- with red paint to enhance the look.
