For me running the car for at least 5-10 miles is a so-called warmed-up.

If my memory serves, even my M2 temperature gauge showed coolant, and you had to bring up the oil temp gauge in the OBC display to see what was really going on. But the OG M2 had the modified N55, not a "real" M engine.

Another hint is to look at the tachometer, as the yellow zone will move up as the engine warms.
My thinking was that it's the other way around though. Wouldn't the oil warm up ahead of the coolant? Either way, when I've monitored both the oil and coolant temps using the jb4 app on the b58 platform, both the oil and the coolant would warm up almost in sync. They would only be no more than within 10 degrees of each other.

Without having a thermostat on the oil like the coolant, the oil goes through the oil coolers all of the time.
So the cooler the ambient air is the longer it will take for the oil to heat and match the coolant temperature.

I’ve made it a practice to make sure the oil temp is up to operating level before driving hard. Both my G80 and E46 M3 take about 15 minutes to do this. My recollection is it was the same with my E90 M3. That’s the point at which I’m comfortable that all of the metal bits in the engine have expanded to operating spec and won’t damage each other by rattling together. I view the coolant gauge more as a warning device in case you have a cooling problem which could cause sudden and catastrophic problems like head gasket failure, etc. I don’t use the coolant gauge as an indicator of the car being fully warmed up.

There is a thermostat.

My Z4 M40i has the B58 engine and the gauge on the right shows the water temperature, not the oil temperature.

Glad to see I'm not imagining it either, but a bit sad to see this is the case.
If it takes longer for the engine to warm up, it also puts more stress on it unnecessarily.

I remember in one of the 5 series I rented at one point, it had the ability to close slots in the grill to get the engine faster at the operating temperature. Once that was done it would open them ...

Looks like this could have been a cool thing for us
The grill function is to open when needs more cooling , and closes for better aero/fuel efficiency. Not because to warm up

Funny. I was thinking the same thing today. Didn't know it was oil temp. It still doesn't get to temp by the time I get to work, but I give it the beans anyway.

No need for technical specs. More tubes man it takes longer.
