Yes, but only because I wanted a GT4/Spyder originally. The 4.0 GTS is not far off it and just a more streetable version. Your going to lose practically but I think it’s worth the swap. Also it’s not something you’ll see on the road as frequent, and it’ll hold a better value 10 years later. (Both hold their values pretty well). I do have a neighbor that does daily’s and tracks their 4.0 GTS Boxster, they keep telling me how amazing of the platform it is.

Depends. They're different cars for different purposes. If I were in the market for a 2-seater, the GTS 4.0 would be in my top two or three vehicles I would be considering, but I wouldn't want one instead of my M4 for how I use my car.

Since my M3 is a third car and I owned a 718 GTS 2.5 last summer I would say yes absolutely but I do around 10 track days per summer, if I would be doing none or only 1-2 the G8X is a tremendous value.
Reason I did not keep it is it would bust my local track sound limit (the 4.0 doesn't have that problem) I got the M3 because I taught I would carry my family more often to the track but I realized I could just trailer my third car and have a happier family in the comfort of our X5.

Definitely depends on your usage case.

The GTS 4.0 was a top choice for my 100% street needs. My very-related and timely thread including today's post about my GT4 test: https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2015590

I went from 981 Cayman S to M3CX. They are both great cars but very different. Cayman is so much fun and engaging, great on the track and on back roads. Feels special to drive. But not very practical with only 2 seats, and not much fun to drive in the city around big trucks and SUVs.
M3Cx is so much more practical and more dual personality, great all around car for commuting and fun when you want it to be. But definitely doesn't feel or look as special as the Cayman. Hard to go wrong with either. Just depends what you want. |

As others have stated, different cars.
Drive the Cayman and that should tell you. But since you are considering the swap, I would assume the M4 is not your daily. If you want a special weekend car and only need two seats, get the Cayman. I bought a new GT4 back in 2016. Great car and very focused. Would love to own one again. |

Thanks for the opinions so far. I’ve always enjoyed Porsches and my M4CX is enroute as we speak. It’ll be my first M car. During a recent chat with a Porsche SA, I randomly asked if a Cayman GTS allocation was available and the answer was yes. I’ve owned a 911GTS in the past and was always interested in its little brother. I currently own a 2 seater special weekend toy but more toys can’t hurt, right!? I’m probably going to stay with the M4 at this point as it will be my daily.

I have a GT4 and a M3 (not x drive). There is virtually nothing in common in terms of experience. The GT4 is perfectly analogue, endless grip with a chassis that is more than a match for its engine. The engine sounds great although it’s muffled quite a bit by today’s euro standards.
The M3 feels more like a muscle car with very powerful engine and an accomplished chassis. It’s the best M3 chassis for ages. Obviously, could go on in detail but most here know about the car. I actually find the M3 more fun in a daily basis. I’ll probably ditch them both when the CS turns up otherwise I’ll have to pay for a divorce. For the road only - don’t get the Porsche. The 4L Porsche engine needs to be revved and the gearing is really long. Even in PDK form 2nd runs til 70+mph. However it’s amazing if you live in a remote area with nice roads and/or use a track. |

If you asked me a year ago I would’ve said yes, but after owning the M4 for a few months I don’t think I would, especially if I’d be using it as a daily.
I really wanted a GTS 4.0 a year ago to replace my Supra, but I realized I couldn’t daily something so impractical. Also it didn’t seem like my SA would ever give me an allocation. To add on, Porsche’s parts shortages are much worse than BMW’s. For example, Porsche isn’t putting PDLS+ on the regular 718s anymore even though it used to be part of the premium package. If I’m paying $120k for a car with missing options I’d rather try finding a CPO 992. |

No. My M3 is my only car. As much as I'd like to own a good Cayman, it can't serve my requirements like the M3 does. Also, even if I had another car, I wouldn't trade my 6MT car for a PDK car.

Not for a GTS. I would for a GT4. When I initially ordered my car I had anticipated driving it more on a daily basis than I do currently. Since mine basically just goes to the track and back I would switch to a GT4 if allocations for one were even remotely available. LOL.

No, much slower than my M4 in any circumstance. Moreover, the M4 is a real candy

If I didn't need 4 seats then yeah. I'd probably be in a GTS 4.0 or even better GT4 myself.
But i's all down to your own personally requirements. I daily mine and drive it to client sites. I can only have one car for myself, so even if I could have a Cayman, GT4 may not be appropriate. |

I had a GTS 4.0 718 Boxster. Other than the top down aspect, I didn’t really enjoy it. Thought the engine was very overrated (only sounded special in the 5-6k band, felt like it was running out of steam above 7k). It felt like a bored/stroked engine (which it is). Gearing was a really big issue on the street. Ride quality was good but the steering feel was numb.
I’m GT4 guise, I think there are actually some engine internals that make it rev more freely toward redline above 7k. Plus better steering feel due to the revised front suspension. IMO, the GT4 is worth what it costs MSRP and is not a substitute for a GT3 or GT3-engine car. I wouldn’t trade a G8x X-drive car for a GTS 4.0 personally. |
