What's Your Next Car that isn't an M3/4?

I honestly didn't think I would love this car as much as I do. I honestly got it half expecting to get rid of it in a year. But now I really love it. However, life is too short, and the last time I got the same car back to back I kind of regretted not getting something different. (I got an F80 M3 CS after owning an F80 M3 Base).

So as much as I love this car, I have to try something new. The catch is, every option I consider makes me compare it to this car, and what I'll be missing from the G82.

Options:

718 GTS 4.0 or 911 GTS - Better handling, but I'm going to miss the interior space and power of the M4. Plus I would like to keep the rear seats.

F87 M2 Competition Manual - I'm going to miss the S58 power delivery and the way it sounds.

G87 M2 - I wasn't considering this until recently. The G82 is faster around the track and more comfortable, so why get this over a G82? Is the weight and shorter wheelbase going to make it more enjoyable? I guess I need to test drive it.

Supra Manual - Again, I would like to keep the back seats. I kind of feel like it will be a step down to go to a B58 from an S58.

Blackwing - nah

C8 - Too flashy for me

What else am I missing???

A good reason to switch, from the sounds of it. I read none.

First world problems. The alpha Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio gets high praise on this forum. It's a four door though and looks a lot like the M3 minus the grill. Only other one I can think of is AMG C63 S, but it appears there are too many compromises in that car.

My 6spd M3 is very hard to compete with. I understand the indecisiveness of your post. I do think this platform can be modded in so many ways to meet the needs of almost any type of enthusiast. The only car I would actively look to buy in place of my M3 is a 992 GT3, but onlyfans is really slow for me these days sooooo it may take a while.

look into the the M2 CS coming in 2025.

I’m probably ordering a GTS 4.0 when I get an allocation, but I have the same concerns regarding power, and the long gearing doesn’t help either. Another thing I’ll definitely miss is the tech and overall interior layout of the M4, since the 718 is basically the same as the 981 that came out ten years ago.

The problem is you're looking for a coupe with back seats, and the performance of a G82. Thats.....a small niche.

Mustang Darkhorse?

How big of a back seat do you need? Forget the damn Cayman. I can't get over Porsche gearing nor their new prices. Go for a 991.2 Carrera T or GTS. Believe it or not you CAN fit people below 5' 3" back there.

Gonna throw you a curveball....Used Taycan Turbo or Audi Etron GT RS? Fast, handle well, have a back seat (and two trunks!). Drive like a Porsche (the ETron is damn close and looks even better). Downsides....EV's lack of emotion. Trackdays are doable but tough.

If you can get past the back seats....Lotus Emira?

The honest truth is that the G8X is a DAMN good overall package. Jack of all trades, master of none but man it gives the masters in each category a run for their money.

I'd say the most natural move is to a 991.2. I know a lot about them, let me know if you need some tips on spec (911's are HIGHLY spec dependent). Either that or the M4 CSL. Should be different enough from your car to make you feel like it's a different scenario. (But no back seats).

This is a difficult Venn diagram....

I'm keeping this car, probably until either I die or the car dies. That said, it certainly won't be the last car I own. I have problems.

Next up for me is the dream car for me, the 911 Turbo S. I feel like the 911 (in some form) is part of the cursus honorum for a lot of M owners anyway.

As far as non-sports cars go, I'm eyeballing the Land Cruiser pretty hard.

Unless you are a track monster, I found the S55 better suited for every day driving with the wild factor at lower RPM and rarely any need to go over 5k RPM. The S58 is shy at low RPMs... So Far, the F87 Comp was the best BMW I have owned. Also, the sound of S58 is not super impressive and MUCH more muted with the stock setup (reason I always drive it in S+ mode)

G87 is not significantly lighter than the G82

I agree on the BW thing....I think it will quickly become outdated...but could be a great option if you plan on switching it within 2-3 years...

As most manufacturers pivot toward hybrids and EVs, how is a sedan with a raucous supercharged V-8 making a factory-produced 668 horsepower, paired with a six-speed manual transmission (as standard), that uses the superb Magnetic Ride Control and suspension technology that provides excellent chassis responsiveness, poise, and control that doesn’t sacrifice everyday ride quality or comfort, how will this EVER be outdated? Because the center screen isn't big enough? Oh, maybe it's because there's a tad too much plastic in the interior?

What I meant by "outdated" is the looks. Just like every previous generation of Caddy-V, looked great when it came out, looks blah today. Now, look at the e46 design, timeless...
As for 668HP that can (or cannot) barely keep up with the 510HP M3Cx...something is off with those numbers. Suddenly, they do not look that impressive any more...
Yes, the sound of the V8 is great.
Suspension, Chassis...again, quickly will (or maybe not) develop squeaks, and feel less tight...just the experience with previous generations...
Hence my comment...2-3 years down the road...

“Nah” on the BW? Lol wut? Hoping you’re referencing the TTV6 4BW?

I’ve owned my manual 5BW for about 5 months now. I would absolutely put money on the fact that it’s the most enjoyable and rewarding car to drive out of your list - in 6 spd form of course.

I’m not a GM fanboi now, still an M car guy, but I think people are seriously missing out on a masterpiece such as this by not entertaining the idea.

Real talk: the bar has been set too high by switching to this car. I can’t even think of where to start with a replacement that will give goosebumps like this car does. It’s a combination of things; the front end and steering feel is worlds better than the G80. The manual is perfection. The power - its everywhere. The sound - the centerpiece. Nothing like it.

As of late I feel like I’ve been on some campaign to create awareness on this thing. Unfortunate that some cannot get past the GM/Cadillac branding.

It does nothing for me. Just a personal preference.

Fair enough.

It’s a driver’s car though, and I know that’s what you’re after.

To give some perspective, It reminds me of my old manual E90 M3, but actually fast.

JMG - Perhaps you should look at a bit of a meme change? What about a Mustang Dark Horse? I don't know if I'd go for one, but I'd think about it.

I certainly did not expect to end up with "I have no idea what's next" two and a half years into owning my M3. As I've been badgered ENDLESSLY by both my dealership and BMW as I get closer to the end of my lease, I cannot come up with any solution better than buying it out.

All of the possibilities that exist are either outside my financial comfort zone (Porsche) and/or include showstopping negative (lack of usable back seats and Costco-sufficient cargo space or some other major negative).

My own take on your choices:

718/911 - Outside of my means spec'd to an acceptable fashion and there would be too many trips that would have to be done with my SO's 530e instead of my car

F87C 6MT - If my M2C had been a manual instead of a DCT, there's a good chance I'd still own it. But I'm glad I don't. It just isn't a good enough car overall compared to the G8x platform.

G87 - Yeah, if my car got eaten by a dinosaur on the highway, I'd seriously consider it. There would be space negatives (back seat size) but I could make do. I've seen them in person enough to not have a real issue with the looks.

Supra Manual - Even the light weight of this car isn't enough to offset the horrible interior packaging. I would not want it as a daily driver unless I was 6 inches shorter

The BW's - I might consider a manual 4BW despite the interior negatives in the dinosaur disaster situation. The 5BW is a total no go due to its size, my garage space, and I'm just not willing to get even worse gas mileage than my M3 in my one-car-at-a-time life. Great car, but it crosses a couple of lines I don't/can't cross.

C8 - I'd be considering it in the same way I'd be considering a 718 of some sort. There are a LOT of usability negatives that offset any pluses from the mid-engine configuration. Used examples can, however, be found at relatively reasonable prices.

Good luck with your deliberations...I don't think there are any clear winners out there.

Looking to sell my Exige for either a 991.2 GT3 RS or a 992 GT3 but the second hand market is still ludicrous for both. Looking to get one hopefully by mid next year for just under MSRP for the 992 or similar price on the 991.2

Still keeping the G80 and she will remain in her throne as the ultimate daily drag sleeper
