This, 100%. I test drove quite a few Teslas and while they were extremely fast off the line but they were SO boring to drive. Tesla's are a tech-person car, not a car-person car.

I'm more interested in the cornering G's.

Anyone else remember when it was insane that a factory production street car could even approach 1 G, let alone exceed it? I mean that was F1 territory, forget Porsche for a moment.

But now? With the right tires a fucking Camry can damn near hit 1G. The G8X, as porcine as it may be, can comfortably exceed it and still be controllable.

0-60 still matters, don't get me wrong, but nowhere NEAR as much as it used to when it was the only metric anyone could really compete on.

Same here. As soon as you hear someone emphasize the 0-60 times, you know they are not an enthusiast.

Those who know, know what an M car is all about.

I hate the whole 0-60 thing. Rolling performance is where most people will use the power. Rather its track driving, canyon driving or daily driving. Launching a car puts a lot of stress on the whole drivetrain and how often are you really sitting at a stop light racing in this matter? Rarely ever

I do predict in the electric car era 0-60 numbers will start to seem like old news. When every electric performance car hits 0-60 3 seconds things will get boring. We will need a new performance measure.

Java green looks amazing to me.
Love signal green too.
Almost went that route myself, but saw Atlantis and thought that was it.
I love that color, but my number 2 was Java green.

Gorgeous.

I'm certainly not fixated on 0-60 or speed in general. The G8X is a wonderful performance car. That's enough for me. 0-60? 0-100? Top speed? Don't care.

Watch some of the comparisons on carwow. The RS5 and RS3 are quick with launch control for 0-60 but get smoked in acceleration at speed. I like how fast my car is in all speeds not just from a stop. And you have to nail those launches in some cars whereas I can hit 3.7 without LC. 503 hp is still massive relative to these 60 sprints of cars with much less HP. Track times are a better comp than 0-60.

To me, the speed is one factor of a car. I chose M3's in the past...and present...not because of the speed, but also the handling, the feel, the quality (can be debated in recent years), and pedigree. There will always be a faster car - in 0-60 or in turns, but most will not give me the satisfaction I have from driving a M3.

Yes, the EV cars are super quick - but, I don't see most owners as enthusiasts. Besides, why would I want an appliance?? I feel like they all look exactly the same - there's no character. I feel like they're from a movie, set in the future, where all the transportation vehicles look the same. So boring!

💯

I had a model 3 performance, and now back to the M3 (my 4th). The quality, comfort, handling, pedigree, enthusiast community, suspension, even software (iDrive8 is infinitely better than the tesla interface) of the M3 trumps the tesla.

That being said, if you need efficiency for a commute, or live in a place with $7-$10/gallon gas, the model 3 performance is a great option. It's a stealthy and lightning quick appliance.

Just tune with some ethanol, and you only have to worry about the plaid as far as speed goes.

Interior quality, they are still catching up to kia and hyundai, and have a lonnnng way before competing with the germans.

The acceleration wars will top out as 0-60 times approach 2 seconds. It's like approaching the speed of light: it takes a LOT more power to get just a little bit faster. That kind of acceleration will always cost money b/c automakers aren't stupid. So that limits the number of cars that will have it.

The danger of every damn EV having decent acceleration, though, is that if you don't have good braking and good dynamics to pair with a heavy boat of a car, that's a recipe for disaster.

On roads far from cities, I seldom if ever see any EVs driving hard and fast. They can't afford the drop in range.

Buy a Tesla plaid and after awhile acceleration doesn’t matter anymore. Rowing the gears seems way more fun to me.

I have the same feeling as many. It's not just about one particular party trick, it's about the whole package. That's why I picked the G80, because it blends so many tangible and intangible qualities so well even if it's not the fastest, or most luxurious, or the tip of the spear in handling.

That said, the interior especially with the full merino is a huge step above many cars even in its price range. I happen to like ID8 as well as the screen.

I’ve owned and driven a lot of great / fast cars but there’s something about my ‘24 M4 Comp X-drive that’s just magical. I’ve never driven a car that has the combination of acceleration, handling, braking, AWD traction, all weather confidence and DD ability. A 911 Carrera 4S is an amazing car performance wise but doesn’t have near the utility as the rear seats are awful and you can’t realistically fit adults back there or even moderately sized kids for any length of time.

MB, Audi feel dead in comparison. BMW truly made an amazing machine.

Straight line speed is boring in any car, really. It's the curves that are fun. It's too bad the reviewers are so caught up in 0-60, but I guess it's easy to do, vs. driving around a track which takes actual skill (and a track).

Have anyone else noticed how anything classed as a performance car is hitting 0-60 times in around 3.5secs or less.

The Xdrive 240i has been hitting 3.2secs in some tests. Likewise, Audi RS3s and we know Merc A45 S are all hitting similar figures too.

Kia have their EV6 GT coming out next year with 540(or so) BHP and Hyundai Ionic 5N with its 500+bhp hatchback out next year which are both gonna be mid 3secs to 0-60 and no doubt they'll pul like a train too being EVs.

I know theyre different gravy, afterall an M is an M is an M and theres no beating that badge for its sporting history and prowess but the accessibility of such 'speed' doesnt feel quite as special (or does it?) as it once did due to the plethora of options available to the average car buyer these days.

what do you think?

I hate to admit this, especially being a car guy, but part of the reason I even noticed the g80x was that 0-60 time. I did like the look, even the grill.
I knew M's reputation and build quality, so I bought one.

The novelty of the 0-60 wears off though, but then you notice other things. You push the car and it's planted, when it let's loose, it's playful, controllable. Mod it and the car is even more alive, it's an animal, but one you can control. It's a usable car, not a 800 hp hellcat then spins it's wheels.

Then with a few button pushes, the car is tame, you're sitting in a conformable, beautiful, leather trimmed interior/seat. Listening to a phenomenal sound system (with a sub install), not hearing a squeak or rattle. Not to mention all the technology you could want in a car.

BMW hit it with the G80X. This is the ultimate driving machine. Grocery shopping, date night, track night, bring the g80. There's no task the car can't handle. Trust me it's good at it, and that includes a 0-60 launch. Owning one, you realize the launch is just the beginning of a much more complex, entertaining and visceral automotive experience. The car is more than just 0-60.

Your second paragraph really summarizes it. A lot of 0-60, 1/4 mile, etc comes first when looking to buy a car on this level. Truth be told if this was a 4.5 sec 0-60 I probably wouldn’t have continued looking into it.
However, once purchasing (and waiting months) or ultimately driving a G8X. The lust for that advertised 0-60 is gone and it’s all about how it drives, handles high speeds, comfortability, etc. This def coincides that a 3 sec 0-60 is normal for us now lol, as someone who came from a 6 sec 0-60 FWD I definitely woo’d over some of the speed metrics prior to ordering.

And I went from a F90 Competition to my G82 M4 just for the joy of driving.
Sure the M5 was faster from a launch, but that was all. I often drive my M4 with no destination, just for the fun .

It's true! I have tesla guys always trying to race me and since their cars make no noise I use it as an excuse to not "notice" them They end up speeding past me, slowing down then speeding up again just to slow down by me. If we happen to meet at a light I'll tell them I didn't notice them. You should see their egos once they realize they blend in with normal traffic.

You're nicer then I am, I gap them all (except plaid but I still haven't even run into one yet) with pleasure at every opportunity.

I have tons of model 3/y performances around the area that always instigate races.
