M Driver's Package unnecessary with aftermarket tune?

Good morning everyone,

I am looking to spec out an M3. I have never purchased an M car before, always have owned SRT vehicles and currently own a 950rwp charger hellcat. I have a question regarding the package that removes the speed limiter in the M3, is that a package I need if I’m planning to get the vehicle tuned in the future? The custom tune should remove the speed limiter correct? Thank you for any help. I am super excited in joining the M community.

Most tunes remove the limiter.

Just curious, are you planning some 170 mph jaunts around the countryside?

No but I have ran 1/2 mile events. So I have done some high speed pulls. I hate to spend 85k and can only hit 155 mph.

So essentially that package is worthless if one plans to custom tune down the road? I just want to make sure I’m not missing anything.

Ya, by itself it's a ripoff as the track day can be had for cheaper and pretty much any tune removes the top speed limiter. I'm sure folks can chime in about typical tunes for M4s, JB4 is one of the more popular. I've gone Dinan in the past, which is pricier but it comes with a warranty and doesn't void the BMW warranty.

It does void the BMW warranty, its just that they will allegedly cover it if BMW denies the claim.

I'm guessing you don't care as if you do half mile you are ordering without sunroof but for all others interested m driver package (or whatever raises the limiter) is not available with a sunroof.

(on the g20 forum apparently people found you can code off VMAX when engine runtime is under 10 hours with esysx)

I will keep it stock for the first year especially it doesn’t seem like there’s too many tuning options yet?

yea I'm in no rush. It will be nice to enjoy a stock car for a little bit. It will be nice to drive without having to worry about where the next ethanol gas station is and just do some spirited driving.

RaceChip is designed to use stock components and 91/93 octane. One of our users, Vic55 has had a good experience with it. r33_RGSport sells them for the States and has special pricing for forum members if you ask nicely.

Dinan on the other hand is working on both the ECU and Piggyback tune as we speak. They expect them out more towards the end of summer.

Edit: BTW, welcome to the forums! I'd be willing to be my house that you will enjoy this car much more than the Hellcat.

Thank you very much. Owner of three previous SRT. So I've been a mopar guy my whole life..not because of any allegiance. It was the only rear wheel drive V8 sedan lol. I test drove an M3 back in 2012 and unfortunately it just felt way too small for me and the M5 has always been my dream car it was just something I couldn't afford back then. Now unfortunately the new M5 just seems very bland and i heard it's not very mod friendly.

I'm extremely new to M world, I have had heard of Dinan, I keep on hearing this piggy back tune. What does that mean?

They’re still trying to secure an allocation for me. Where are you from. I have raced a ton of GTRs, including some just stupid crazy fast that I can’t believe it’s that fast lol.

Keep in mind piggybacks cannot remove the top speed limiter. That can only be done with a flash

I'm in south Jersey. Yeah, there are some around that are just bonkers. I was at Ivey one day picking my car up and rode in one that was 1800 at the wheels Made mine feel like an M4. I wanted to stay just around a 1000 for reliability and spool. So far so good

How much will that cost. It has to be cheaper than the M drivers package.

You would smoke me at 1000 at the wheels. I’m 400-500 hundred pounds heavier. I watched this 1500 rwhp huracan against a 1500 rwhp. Nasty. They got up to 200 in like no time. I really want a GTR. I just can’t commit over 100k to a 12 year old body style even though I love it lol.

If som how the m3 can hit a 60-130 high 4s or low 5s. That would be perfect for me.

My plans are DP, meth, port injection, bigger turbos (not just hybrid), and E85 tune and I'm thinking we should be in the 4's for a 60-130. We need the ECU to be cracked for flashing tuning first. Does anyone know what the limits are for JB4? Can you go full E85 with it?
