Michelin Pilot Sport 4S vs 4S* OE M3/4

Great video on the difference between aftermarket and BMW star-spec 4S rubber made for the M3. More different than one would maybe think.

Very interesting. I had no idea that there was any difference in buying a 4S from BMW or a Tire shop. Do these only come on new cars or can you buy replacements from BMW for the foreseeable future?

Damn PZero's

OE tyres can be bought outside of BMW, too, just like other genuine BMW parts.

Would be interesting to know whether BMW M also spends as much time developing tyres with Continental or Pirelli as they do with Michelin.

So you can't get BMW OEM 4s from Tire Rack or another tire company?

That’s pretty much a different tire all together... like a 4S Cup! Tires have a massive impact on performance, one of the big reasons G8X can put down the lap times that it does

I don't care about weaker wet traction, because I drive very conservatively in the rain....as long as it's not "dangerous". I want the dry grip heightened.

Great video, makes me wonder what BMW did with Pirelli for the pzero. I would like to think that they would not go to such lengths to design the perfect custom tire with Michelin and then just slap significantly sub-performing pzeros on the other 50% of the cars.

Sure can. See below from tirerack.com (click to view full image it crops weird on mobile) and note the "star BMW"

Thanks for sharing!!!

I just watched this video and was about to post it, but you beat me to it.

First, it just shows how important it is putting the right spec tire on car, it can make a huge difference.

Second, it is interesting to see that BMW focused more on dry grip at the expense of wet grip for the G8X. They did the opposite with the F8X OE tires.

Third, WOW ~2 seconds difference per minute lap on the dry vs the already quite good standard PS4S . The standard PS4S was already confirmed as being over 1 second faster than the star spec PSS on the F8X. Just shows how much of the G8X performance gains is in the tires .

Fourth, I would have loved to try these star spec 19"/20" PS4S on my M4cs, but it will be gone before I have a chance to do so

I watched this and all I thought about was tagging CanAutM3 in it

Very interesting! I do wonder what the F90 M5 * spec PS4S is like in comparison to the G80 version

So is the rear 285/30/20 4s not a BMW star? Tire Rack only shows the front being actual BMW spec

Noticed this too, can anyone that had a car come with Michelins check to see if the rear is a BMW Star Spec tire?

So where are you going to buy these BMW Star PS4S tires from if tire rack only has the fronts?

They should become available in more outlets as time goes. Also, being from the industry, please support your local tyre dealer; they should be able to source them from their various suppliers (Michelin incl.).

For sure they do, all G8X that roll off the factory floor with PS4S will have star specs front and rear. TireRack simply does not have them in stock just yet.

In principle, your dealer should be able to order them as well as any local tire shop. However, it might take a little while before they become available in inventory at local distribution warehouses.

So I ordered both front, and rear PS4S star spec, for my stock 19"/20" wheel config, from America's Tire yesterday. They will be holding them locally so I don't risk having a sourcing issue while I burn up these P-Zero's.

I ran into the same problem of not being able to find the rears and I wanted to quickly share what I learned:
  • PS4S BSW (star spec) are currently Tire Rack exclusive (America's Tire thus is buying from them for me)
  • The rear MSPN # is: 66946, and the front is MSPN # is 21325 (this was confirmed directly on the Michelin site, be sure to double-check if you have the alternative wheel setup as these MSPN #'s are likely different)
  • The Tire Rack site currently lists the rear (MSPN # 66946) without denoting the star spec. Tire Rack confirmed via phone that this indeed is the correct MSPN, and that their site is currently listing it incorrectly (oops data team).
  • Both front and rear star spec tires are currently in-stock!

I will update this thread once the tires show up and I can visibly confirm the star on both front and rears. Should be next week!

In the meantime, I wanted to post this as to hopefully save some time and anxiety of sourcing these star specs

I'm so excited to put mine on!

Tires came, and just confirming both front and rears have "
the stars" on them. So the information above, including part numbers is correct.

I think that if they blind tested all current owners of this car, most will not be able to tell the difference imho.
