Lots of posts on this, and I don't know the specifics off-hand, but basically between all of the cars sensors and data collection points, it can determine what is normal/expected and not. If they dig enough, it will be clear something was modified.

Everyone, please be 100% certain that if you blow an engine, whether you had a piggy or a flash tune will not matter in the least. BMW will find it and deny your engine warranty

Piggybacks change what the parameters SHOULD be. The ECU still records what they actually were.

The chances that a well designed piggyback (designed to run pump gas) is gonna blow the motor or trans within the first 10-30k miles is equal to the chance of those drivetrain components being defective from the factory in my opinion. However...If you got a defective engine/trans (and it happens) from the factory, BMW is gonna give u the booty finger because they will figure it out. They designed and built the car. On the other hand you do stage 2+ ecu/tcu tunes or run corn you are asking for it in my opinion. Not that I wouldnt do it, but I would make sure I have at least $20-30k laying around in case I blow shit up. Also, how many people are putting tons of miles on these tuned cars? Im asking because I have car AHDH and flip them usually 10-15k miles topps

I am fine with the idea of tuning, there are a few features I would like to enable that I did not purchase with my dealer car (6MT), it had most of what I wanted on it and I have no regrets, I love the color (Alpine White/ full leather - absolutely love the Yas marina blue leather) and the packages it did come with as a first week dealer car off the showroom floor. I would not have bought the 185+ unlock anyway, but a tune could open that up for me one day and I do have a place I could test that out. I will say this though, I had my car in Mexico yesterday with my R7 in full lookout on the way home from Costco and on an interstate stretch of highway I pulled her up to 130MPH very quickly and man I caught up to traffic fast, I was gently on the brakes, so other than a racetrack, the stock power is more than I can possibly safely use on the road...but boy is the S58 smooth and satisfying especially the joy of rolling through the gears! Good luck to everyone that tunes the S58 early on. Be careful and Godspeed.

I have owned many new cars and have modified them all to some extent. When I purchase a car I do not concern myself with warranty. I modify the car, tastefully, and drive it to enjoy it. I have no secrets with the service advisor when taking the car in for oil change, etc. I let them know up front that the car has been tuned. I have owned many new cars that I have modified and have never had a warranty issue, never. To each his own as to what makes one comfortable with their cars.

It is not a warranty thread, but to have a proper discussion it's important to call out that tuning will void your warranty. This seems obvious, but we don't want someone to read you can fool BMW and lose warranty. Tuning is a pay to play sandbox. The question isn't whether it voids the warranty, because that is evident, the question is when it can be done and what does reliability look like |

FWIW, I was not trying to ruin or derail the thread, just trying to properly educate myself on the matter. Thanks for the information.

Interesting video. I know zero about the technology, but the take away is it changed numbers on a readout graph from 480 to 560. Not to take anything away from the bright guys who did this, but that is not proof of concept to me. As someone noted, the car wasn't even started--much less driven, dynoed, etc. I would be very interested in seeing actual proof of concept. I do wish them the best, although much of what his posted statements were seemed convoluted--including "requirements" to go forward.
