Question What are the differences in the tires?

I know some people are getting different tires, one of which people seem to like better than the other. And, it seems to be random what we get?

So because I'm not so tire smart - what are the different ones people are getting? Which is the 'better' option and why is it better? And, for everyday driving would you notice much of a difference between the two?

Either P-Zeros or Pilot Sport 4S are excellent ultra-high performance summer only tires. I understand that BMW also uses Conti Extreme Contact Sport. They are also excellent. Had them as replacements on my '13 Vette. Won't go wrong with any. My M4 Comp came with Pirellis.

So pricewise I think PS4S is a bit more expensive. For daily drives, they are all great performance summer tires. In terms of track uses, people do complain about P0 losing grip after a few laps while IMO PS4S is almost the best you can find which can handle both track and street really well. Overall, I think people view Michelin as the better option but it all comes random. Based on my observations so far, there are a lot more P0 than PS4S.

The PS4Ss seem to be universally praised as an unbelievably good tire. My interpretation is that the difference isn't so good that you would bin 4 new P0s just to swap, but once you wore out the P0s (maybe more aggressively than you ordinarily would) you would probably choose the PS4Ss to replace them

For everyday driving, there would be no difference.

Cool. Then since I'm not going to likely ever track it I won't get upset if I don't get the "better" tire.

in warm and dry environment both the pirelli and michelin will be excellent, where the latter stands out is in longer tread life and supreior cold/wet performance.

Anecdotally the pirelli pz4 hasn't done a great job so far with Toronto in the 45-55F range and frequently rainy. I rmb going up an uphill on-ramp in 4th and rear was spinning lol... But the few days we had that was very warm and very sunny, the grip was impeccable and I could echo the broad reviewer sentiment that its almost AWD-like.

C&D did a test comparing this class of tires a while ago and have similar conclusions

Whichever tire comes with your M3/M4, it's the BMW spec tire (star on the sidewall) which means it's slightly different than the standard spec tire. That means any tire review you read may not be entirely relevant.

The Pirelli is an excellent tire and if you got a PS4S, it's expected to be a little bit better. Outside of a track, you won't really notice any difference.

Since I'll be driving my car year round, I'll get separate set of wheels for the winter tires and once these Pirellis are worn, I'll be replacing them with performance all season tires (A/S 3+ or DWS 06 Plus)

For daily driving, the P Zero is fine for me, plenty of grip on corners. On the track might be a different story.

I've had both

DWS are softer & last longer

as3+ (now as4) are significantly better performance wise although it's not a day and night difference, you feel it

The DWS in a straight line hook up so nicely though it's kind of surprising how an all season hooks like that (on high horse powered cars 450+ rwd)

I don't entirely agree with this. I've had both tires on a few different vehicles. I thought the PS4S provided a bit of a softer ride, and was overall quieter than the P0. Probably a 10-15% difference which, for some, makes all the difference. I always felt the PS4S took the "edge" off what have mostly been firmer riding vehicles I've owned. Wear has been comparable between the two.

I also had Supersports before. Lovely tire, super quick wear. Although, that certainly driver-induced

I got Yokohama's on my G80-6MT with the 18/19 inch and they feel pretty good at high speed cornering, under hard acceleration/braking and in the wet, but maybe it's just because I love rowing the gears so much on the best car I have ever owned.

PS4S is just a better tire than the P0. There's a reason why bmw fits a lot more P0 than PS4S probably cause the P0 is cheaper or something. In the dry the P0 handles fine when you're pushing the car.

But if you really want to feel alive try giving the car on P0 some throttle on a rainy day w/ temps right above minimum recommended threshold for summer tires. It feels like you're skating. A bit sketchy but kind of fun at the same time.

My and many others got PZero's with our RS3's and they possibly were the worst tire I have ever had! So many of us got sidewall bubbles within days of delivery it was comical how many ordered replacement wheels and tires to coincide with the RS3 delivery.

I will never own a P Zero again! Glad my M3 arrived with the PS4's.
