Built in speed trap detection

It's not listed by my dealer, on the bmwusa.com, or in any review on the g8x (and I promise you ive watched every review that is in English) but my car the other day warned me of a speed trap nearby!! I googled it and it says all g8x's are equipped with this feature as a subscription service that will prompt you after 3 months if you'd like to continue using the service....hell yes I would!!!! its $25 for 18 months

Anyone else know about this?

Mine pops up warnings about "speed camera in 1000 feet" when there clearly isn't one. I'd like to know where they get the data.

So I thought the same thing when it first prompted me, my buddy and I decided to loop back around and look for where the camera was...sure enough we found a hidden speed camera in the bend of a highway sign

I probably would have never seen it without being told it was there by the car

Was it any specific app or just a mode within Idrive?

Interesting. I would have thought this is not legal but I'm not complaining!

The navigation app Waze has been doing this for a decade now. They use a combo of their data and crowd sourced data. No ones challenged it yet. Let’s hope it stays that way.

I’m glad to see it making its way into OEM systems.

Many states legally have to warn you as well, with "Photo Enforced" warning signs. To make it illegal flies in the face of their argument that they are for slowing down cars as opposed to issuing tickets/generating revenue. If the speed trap warning slows you down, it accomplishes their purported purpose.

Don't blindly subscribe because it is "only $25 for 18 months" or "only $19 for 12 months", like the paperwork that came with my car says. The speed cameras are not legal in California and more than half of the other states. Check the regulations where you drive.

Added note: Red light cameras ARE legal in California.

I'd love to have Waze integrated (but don't know how well the current OEM solution works)

They're not legal, but I think they send them to collection and\or hit your credit score. I've heard of a few people that ended up paying the ~$500 fee just for the peace of mind.

The X3M has this as well. Red light and speed cameras but its only a trial for 3 months. I haven’t decided if we’ll renew the trial or not.

Also, Apple Maps will now crowd source similar to Waze on this information so if you use CarPlay for your navigation, it will show up on there for free.

What does it cost if you pay for it?

That is very cool, except that I can see it becoming a bit of a PITA if there are speed cameras and red light cameras on your regular daily commute.

There's no audio que it's just a minor notification next to your speedometer so it hasn't been a pain

I wouldn't have even noticed it until my passenger pointed it out but now that I'm aware I do recognize it's there when it's triggered

Ah, that must be why I didn't notice it yesterday after going through a red light camera intersection. DAMHIK that it has a camera.
