The ZL1 is cheaper than the G80, although obviously not to the same extent as the Mustang GT. Frankly speaking, if all we cared about was performance, we'd all be driving Zl1s as they represent the single greatest performance bargain on sale today (especially with the track special 1LE package).

The Mustang GT is even cheaper still (at 37k, as you noted). You can't "spec out at GT to a GT500", as the GT500 isn't a trim level, it's a car onto itself.

At the core of the issue I think we agree though - the G80 is more expensive AND slower than the American counterparts, but comes with a ton of other benefits that can't be measured on a track or drag strip.
That's one heck of an exaggeration my friend. Just because BMW has held back the G80 to 50% of its capable power. And I was talking about the GT500. My bad on that. The GT500 is 70+K "Eat alive"?? Yeah no. Not the GT. Probably the GT500 yes. That's certainly not if you unlock the s58. Put all three of those cars on a track stock and what would happen?? And I'm sure you're not going to argue with me about technology.
I'm not sure I follow.

The GT500 and the ZL1 would both beat the G80 (stock vs stock), both on a drag strip and on a track. The current SS Camaro beat the F80 handily, which is what I mean when I say the version of that Camaro with upgraded suspension, brakes, and 200 more horsepower would eat the G80 alive.

But, as I said, there are things the G80 brings to the table that make it a better car for me (and plenty of others).

Maybe you and I have different definitions of “eat alive”. It says here it has a zero to 60 of 4 seconds. It also says it’s a 455 hp engine. Now the ZL1 is a completely different animal at 650 hp 8 cylinder engine and 0 to 60 in at 3.5 seconds which I really wouldn’t say that’s eating the G80 alive when it’s only beating it by .3 seconds and that’s the rear wheel drive version. Besides with an 8 cylinder engine shouldn’t we really be comparing it to the M5 regardless of pricing? Of course German made products will always be higher than American made because they’re more bad ass. An H&K cost lots more then an S&W right? that’s because it’s better. :-) Either way my friend .3 seconds is not getting eaten alive. IMHO. If you think it is then you must think the M5 completely annihilates and destroys the ZL1 because as you know the M5 goes 0 to 60 in 3 seconds.

Continuing to pull on this thread....the Model S Plaid must be Top 3 production supercar in the world with it's 0-60 in 1.99 seconds. As it "eats" pretty much everything alive by the 'eat alive' definition.

Yeah but that car is ugly and effeminate. So there’s that.

….all for a lower price of entry.

For example, 2003 WS6 Fire hawk Camaros and SVT Mustangs used to absolutely romp on E46 M's, especially from a roll. The American muscle was faster in the 1/4 mile too. I used to see Camaro's, 'Stangs and Vettes at autox events in the early 2000's putting in work on the Germans (…with lower tech….push rod, etc.).

Case in point:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.mot...camaro-ss/amp/

It has been like this for 20 years.

…and I love these old comparo articles:

M3 owners have always understood the competition was equally as fast or faster, but we went with the Germans for the tech/innovation, the quality and all of the other intangibles that don't translate into objective performance numbers. We love(d) our M's, but they were not necessarily kings of the performance hills. When it came to performance and modifications, American muscle was potent and for less financial outlay. I still remember the first time I ever rode in a modded SVT. My god was that car an animal.
This.

I would only add that the WS-6 was a Trans Am, the Firehawk was a separate TA package. Also, the TA was discontinued in 2002 which also marked the end of the 4th generation Camaro. The 2003 Terminator SVT Cobras were 12 second cars stock and were much quicker than the previous ones.

I owned two Ram Air WS-6 TAs (one automatic, one 6 speed) and E36 M3 and E46 M3 in a fairly short period of time. While the E36 didn't have a prayer, I'd say the E46 was pretty close in acceleration and could even edge out the TA from a roll more often than not, but it was definitely a drivers race.

The Terminators were in a different league from all the aforementioned cars.

I’m pleased to report that the G8x is quite competitive with the ZL1 (impressive car). In a straight line, it’s a dead heat.

Thank you. The G8x bumps the M3/M4 up a class relative to American muscle. I think this car’s practically a bargain if you can keep it around $80k. BMW M will almost certainly win back a lot of customers who churned to other makes during the F8x generation.

Huh that is very unexpected. It looks like the ZL1 is a manual, but that alone shouldn't account for the difference.

I can't quite make out if the car in the video is the current or last gen ZL1.

Yeah, it might do 0-60 in 1.99, but by the time you reach 60, you've stabbed yourself in the eye for how boring a car it really is that which you bought

As Chris Harris put it, that's all it has. They'll just keep getting faster and faster, but at some point that wears off and it isn't really that comfortable going to mach 5 in under 2 seconds over and over. Just something you brag about and show your buddy one time and the novelty wears off.

Chalk one up for the newbie - the G80 looks great in 3/4 view and there was a lot of love and attention given to this SPY last night at the Charlotte Street Car Takeover.
