If I had a US spec M3/M4, I would go for the AA single midpipe, no brainer. Mine is UK spec so the lack of OPF/GPF would make fitting the midpipe an issue.

I find x-pipe midpipes too loud, reminds of the S58 along with the rasp/tin sounding exhaust. Whereas a single midpipe is more a of a refined and deeper sound.

In my opinion anyway, others may disagree.

Very happy with the PSI midpipes lately. Easy to install, sound great and no issue with clearing the center exhaust bracket.

Im going with the AA single mid. Had it on my F80 and I really liked it. It was between that and the Valvetronic.

You'll get a better deal and perfect fitment from Inked Customs.

He's the only guy using a flex joint to make sure the downpipes fit no matter what.

He also isn't overloaded with volume like AA has been recently.

Check him out on instagram.

Single midpipe will always sounds better with catless. Dp Otherwise PSI is great with catted DP.

We do have both in stock if you like we can take care of you.

Then leave it alone. But seriously, you won't need to smog this car for 8 years. Are you going to keep it that long? You can change out any of these midpipes back to stock in 30 minutes. Keep the stock midpipe in the garage.

Wow! 8 Years?!?! Only 4 here in VA. I guess because CARB is stricter than 90% of the other states... do they have roadside dectors in CA?

Here in VA we have boxes set up on the side of the road that sniff the cars & snaps a picture of their tag if they are polluting (only Northern VA) usually on off/on ramps near highways where a load is put on the vehicle.

This is bad advice.

The single midpipes are pretty different from the x/h pipe midpipes in terms of sound. You can't just "pop one" and say it doesn't make a difference which one you choose.

Single midpipes eliminate a lot of rasp, which is why they sound great with catless dp's. Since OP is looking to stay legal, I'd just get the resonators cut out by a muffler shop then buy a Remus race axle back. It'll sound pretty mean despite stock dp's as is evident by Shmee's video.

Considering the stock muffler is in the back i think anything good that merges exhaust banks will be similar enough where they will sound roughly the same. X pipe is a bit higher pitch. I agree the design matters (especially pipe diameters) but i think most top tier companies mentioned here have pretty good midpipes. I bet its not dramatically different like a rear muffler swap. DP definitely complicate things a little

PLife is right. I went AA single mid and while it’s a little deeper and smoother sounding, it basically sounds 80% the same as stock, just a little louder.

I don't think there is one single best option. It's subjective and a lot of the options on the market are a major upgrade over stock

I have the AA X-pipe and I like it a lot. The AA single is one of the most popular options. X-pipe is louder than the single, This plays a role when you add an axle-back.
Some customers want the more aggressive sound with the X-pipe, others prefer the single to keep the exhaust volume under control.

The same goes with PSI and valvetronic midpipe with valvetronic being very similar to the AA single.

Thanks for the response Mike tbh it helps because i dont want something quiet so im probably going to go with the xpipe option as stated above its louder then single.

Resonators have nothing to do with smog. They only lower the exhaust noise. Only the catalytic converters in the downpipes do that.

Unless you are in CA, then everything has to do with smog

Is there any added rasp with the AA or PSI options?
