MST Intake Kit vs Aftermarket Panel Filters

Has anyone got any advice or feedback on using an MST Intake Kit vs aftermarket panel filters on the new G8x cars?

Obviously the MST Intake Kit looks better in the engine bay, however that's not really my thing as I don't do shows, etc.

So I'm wondering what the real world difference is, in terms of performance gains and induction noise?

TIA

There aren't too many performance gains to be had with an intake. BMC drop in filters are all you need really if you care about performance. Dynos will show some gains with an intake system but again, you really won't notice a few whp on your butt dyno.

However, if you'd like more noise then you could look into BMS' intakes. The elite version purportedly makes plenty of turbo spooling and whistling noises. I personally am prioritising exhaust and cosmetic mods before looking into an intake. There's also a custom made MSR intake featured on NCG80M3's channel recently that I'd love to hear in more detail. MSR made a wicked sounding, albeit expensive, intake for the F8X platform, so I'd like to hear what they have in store before pulling the trigger on any intake.

And if you ask me, most of that negligible power increase comes from the fact that you are ridding yourself of those pesky carbon filters that are located just above the engine air filters.

What I did, was to pull those out and on my next time when I need new engine air filters, I'll get some BMCs or K&Ns and call it good.

The picture below shows one of the intakes with one of the carbon filters already pulled out by me. The other one is pulled out from the center from opposite edges in one piece; not that I would want to re-use them, since they are useless unless you're an environmentalist whose job depends on creating issues where there are none

The dual stock air boxes and filter sizes can support huge power. Removing the charcoal filters and trays and installing BMC drop ins will add power and maintain really low IATs.

Aftermarket intakes help with sound primarily and may show a slight gain compared to the stock setup with the charcoal filters in.

Open intake can get up to 15 more whp per BMS dyno, it also sounds a lot nice than just filters

It would be much more beneficial to see the power gains with the intake with NO JB4 or any piggyback. I suspect the gains to be more around 3-5hp, if that. With that said, you get these for sound and they do a great job for that.

This guy does a great job explaining the science behind these

more data is always better, im sure the more power the car is pushing the more gains you can get from the additional airflow.

Yeah, you are spot on with that. I don't understand why they would do a dyno showing the improvements of the CAI, with a mod that a lot of people probably won't have installed. The only reason I can gather is that it does not make any gains with stock tuning. Again, that's not the reason you buy it anyway (in my opinion), but I am sure some people feel differently.

If looking for only performance, get BMC Filters and remove the charcoal liners.

Most of the intakes you see being marketed are showing the gains as a result from the the filters & charcoal liners being removed - with a bonus of including the asthmatic sounds and underhood bling.

+1

if you only care about power, filters should do it.

If you want power and sound, consider the intake replacement

Sorry to bring back an older thread, but has anyone tried an air filter from Sprint Filters?

The filter looks like a screen door! Lol

I was in the same dilemma but I never do car shows so I opted for BMC drop ins. You can kind of hear the spool noise with the drop ins but if you really want the noise mst or any front mount will be a better fit

I'm not familiar with the brand but if you are going to get a filter, BMC is the right choice
