That's awesome! definitely a step forward in customisation for new potential buyers.

I could go for some sort of tasteful low-contrast option. Something like the SVJ Xago honeycomb idea if it's on something special like a CSL and designed by someone other than me or the team that thought this would look cool.

Imagine the possibilities…as a semi-artistic person this is super exciting, even if I’d never use it myself.

Matching the mirror caps and bottom aero trim in an offset color? Using matte and gloss paints together for accents? More subtle model logos “hidden” in the paint (think a flat m3 logo in a metallic paint and vice versa).

While I am not a huge fan of the jack o lantern sample car either, as was mentioned, it is nothing more than a showcase for the tech.

I can't see myself ever driving one, but one of my childhood favorites was the Dodge Viper (white with blue stripes).

Downside: how to repaint those panels in the aftermarket if you damage them
Maybe BMW could offer some way to order the replacement part pre-painted from the factory? I'm sure it's horrifically expensive to do something like that. They'd have to save each customer's unique design and have the ability to "re-print" it when needed.

Seems more likely that they'd sell you the car and wish you the best of luck if you damage it.

Nice tech and I look forward to see the possibilities. But it would have been nice to see a more "BMW" livery sample, like the E36 M3 Lightweight below for example. Too bad BMW will probably want a kidney and your first born if you want to order this type of customization in the future….

Amazing. I wonder how sharp the lines are up close. The only photo that might have shown close up detail is blurry where it gets close.

Amazing technology, I just don't like the color combo. I would of liked to see something more subtle.

^ This - imagine a less-intrusive combo like a metallic black and a frozen black, like those cars with metallic black with a matte decal?

I'd definitely bet this exact same design would look 100x better if the car was a blue or grey. Even IOMG with black would look killer.

Regardless, this technology is absolutely wild - that level of detail with no masking to other body panels? No more month-long sits in a body shop because the robots do it on the assembly line? What a time to be alive.

That was likely similar to the Heritage F82 stripes, where "the decorative strip has been integrated directly into the CFRP fabric", prior to a clearcoat.

I think this will look best with frozen/glossy combos.

Everything else seems too MOPAR.
