Any Upsell Options Worth It?

On another thread people were discussing the hard sell tactics of the finance manager when picking up their cars.

Which options are typically offered and are there any you recommend?

I know three M3/M4 owners and none of us were offered the same price for the brakes maintenance. 3 of us from the same dealer on order, Dec21 to May22.

I really dont know the dynamics but it doesn't seem like this is a factory set price and the information was taken down from BMW's website recently. I think dealers set their own prices but someone else may need to confirm this.

I did not go with any but I really considered the Brakes package. These are expensive brakes to get OEM changes on and if they happen to warp, you can't resurface the rotors. Tires are also expensive but I never get tires from a dealer.

My 2cents, I would only consider the tires and brakes if you purchase. Leasing is a different situation but can be considered depending on driving miles, 45k, 36k, 30k, 23k

I just picked mine up yesterday and they were offering about 5 different option packages, I was not interested in any of them so they blew over them pretty quick. The ones I recall were Gap insurance, tire rim package, maintenance pkg, extended warranty, and a paint windshield and interior protection pkg. The PPP or paint protection package was about $2300 and at first they made it sound like a full PPF, windshield and interior protection as well for $2300, sign me up. Asking the right questions I got to the details and it was an easy pass. $2300 for 5 year protection that won't protect against rock chips but if a bird poops on your car you are covered. They then offered a 1yr pkg for $900, it was an easy pass for me on all of the finance add on options.

Agreed. Pass on everything. Insure only what you can't afford to lose and you will save tens or hundreds of thousands in a lifetime. Of course, there will be that 10% that make out but remember 90% don't and no one talks about the weekend they lost big in Vegas

My thoughts are if BMW made more money on the actual maintenance vs the "package" why would they hard sell the package to every buyer…. You are probably better off paying for this as you go. The question for me is always how long will I drive it, what maintenance will I have to do, and when I do the math the package makes no sense. I guarantee you though they make money on these with the hope the car gets wrecked, traded in or sold and no one ever knows the package exists. I sold a cpo car last year and the buyer had to jump through all kinds of hoops to get it transferred to his name and they told him there is only a small window to transfer after sale from private party (of course we updated bill of sale so he can still be "in" window"…. Anyways hard pass on this for me.

Another vote to skip those all, I have done it on all my BMWs. Here and there I regretted not getting the tire and rim package though when I had a nail in the tire(s) but I get over it quickly, I don't buy tires at the dealership….

If you are driving a lot of miles every year the maintenance package could be a good deal, but you can shop for it afterwards and buy it from ANY BMW dealer. You can negotiate hard on these, dealer has significant markup.

I got the wheel and tire for my X3MC and it has easily paid for itself. They don't patch tires, they replace them. Haven't tried their refinishing services yet though.

Thank you to everyone who has responded!

Yeah, it is so difficult to guess how long I will have the car. I normally want a change every 2-3 years but this car seems pretty special and might last awhile. I am also considering some mods that would impact warranty so that is also a factor.

I've always been told GAP insurance was worth it, in case some idiot hits you. It'll pay the difference between the claim. Should this be a pass?

If it helps, I tend to keep my cars for a long time and never bought any of these packages. I keep my cars dealer maintained and leverage the BMWCCA discount and other dealer specials. Tires, detailing, PPF, etc. tends to be too expensive at dealer…….

That totally depends on how much down payment you make, term of loan, and likelihood of getting the car stolen or in a really bad accident.

Generally though, no, it's not worth it. As noted above, there is huge profit in these add - ons.

This...

Interestingly when I was shopping for financing a CU said my M4's wholesale value was 79k and that was the dollar amount they would finance at their best rate, if I borrowed more add .25 to the rate. It was if my options weren't worth squat, 84,145 was msrp with my options before the 995 destination. TTL and various other fees it is easy to be upside down. I had 5k equity in my M440ix and $500 loyalty to help balance my scale.

Tire and wheel isn't bad. The Maitenance warranties are worth it if you can talk them down a bit. Well if you plan on keeping the car longer than 3 years. I did wheel, tire, and windshield. Windshield because of the horror stories from this forum and the cost of the package was close to my deductible.

I passed on all of them but have an option on the BMW brake package at $700 (at closing I told them I wanted a few weeks to drive and make sure I love the car before adding anything, they agreed). They told me it covers pads, rotors, and wiper blades for 3/36 and a few other things. Seems like the brake coverage alone is worth it, I am sure I would at least need new pads in this period?

If you drive the car or even track it it's a no brainer...

A full set of brakes is way more than 700.

Also, the pro is if you keep the car long term and if you have a good CA they will use this before your 36k is up as the G80 can eat the rears.

Thanks Doc. I did buy the car with the intention of keeping it, and the CA said the same thing - you will definitely need brakes before 36k. Seems like a very fair price. I like the M4 enough that I am also considering ordering a 23 in an individual color, they said the package would stay with the car so that could be a perk for a new owner.

Again you won't..just depending on driving style and if you track.

Neither the F90 or F80 I've had ever needed brakes

Grand scheme whats 700 dollars on a 80/90 or 100k car

Upgrading to cover the brakes under the maintenance plan has always been worth it for me.

On my '18 M3 CS it was $700. I got new pads and rotors around the 2 year mark.

On my '20 X7 I didn't buy the extension at the time of lease, but a few months ago I found out that my front brakes were almost in need of replacement. I called up my finance guy and bought the extension for $700. Car is getting new front pads and rotors today.

Basically, it all comes down to how you drive. But, keep in mind, you don't have to buy it at the time of signing. You can buy it later. Also, you don't have to buy it from your local dealership, so shop around for the best prices.

Good info! So how many miles/ year do you drive and are you going to the track?

I do about 8k miles per year. The M3 was on the track maybe 2 or 3 times. The X7 has never been on the track. But, its a heavy beast.

I've done my own brakes on my motorcycles and a few previous cars, but this will be my first BMW M car. Is there any particular reason it's more complex / difficult? I mean I'm seeing pads online for a couple hundred bucks...
