Resonators
Hi guys good afternoon if you're reading this I hope you are having a great weekend this far. I wanted to get a new exhaust but I have no intentions of modifying just yet I am just looking for a little more noise. I used to have a 2018 m3 cs and I kind of miss the noise since the g80 is not as loud from the factory at least the way I have it specced.
An option I've seen on YouTube was cutting out the resonators. A friend advised me that it could potentially damage the vehicle I am not sure whether this is true and figured I would ask here. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Pic for attention [IMG][/IMG] Have a good weekend thank you Nick

Resonators are probably the least expensive, best bang for your buck exhaust mod you can do. They are just chambers in the exhaust piping designed to reduce exhaust noise. Resonators are passive parts, and are not emissions related.
To remove them, all a shop has to do is cut before and after, then weld in a section of straight pipe in place. they typically use stainless piping as it is low cost and lasts longer than the car. So long as they have half a brain cell, there should be no concern for damage. Total cost should be a few hundred dollars total give or take. It is also totally reversible, as they can simply cut the straight pipe and weld back in the resonators. It seems with this platform, deleting the resonators provides a volume increase (stock sounds but slightly louder), while changing out the muffler (an axle back exhaust) changes the tone of the exhaust (making it deeper pitch typically.) Look for videos by Vic55 showing his blue M3 with just resonator delete for a sample.

I did it. That plus an exhaust controller is a good start and plenty for me. Total cost with controller was $600. And easily reversible.

I'm torn between the awe (which I loved the sound of for Audi applications) or just doing resonator delete.

Okay great thank you guys for the input. I'm going to get this done. I'm not really worried about the noise increase. The mrs gonna have to hold it down hahaha
Thanks again, fellas

Here is video showing how removing both resonators sounds:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/WiCUE6v6VNA I believe the owner replaced one resonator with straight pipes and the other resonator with X-pipe. Secondary cats still kept here. Later on the owner removed them as well and this is the sound: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/01y4LbAJ8C8 |

Resonator delete and exhaust valves disable are the best mods you can do for more sound. Mine cost $400

Combined with all the forum members who have done just resonator delete and say the volume is increased, it makes me think the exhaust muffler is more for modifying the tone, and the resonator delete (i.e. midpipes) are what produces any increase in volume, or at least are responsible for the vast majority of volume increase. Instead of the usual soundclips, I'd love to see a decibel readout for stock muffler with and without resonators, and same for the awe. That way we can better understand how the options work in different combinations.

Here is another video with resonators delete with X-pipe that also has some decibels measuring.
Personally I like how this sounds best if someone is on a tight mod budget and doesn't want to mess with downpipes/secondary cats (due to state laws). The other sound I like is Valvetronic single midpipe: |

Here is the video for the AWE axle back onle i will be posting the video for the resonator delete soon. Doing one and not the other is not enough in my opinion. It just does not add much in terms of volume.

I’m tossing up whether to:
a) delete both resonators b) delete both resonators and secondary cats c) delete first resonator and secondary cats Any opinions? Like most people I’m looking for more volume and burbles/pops, but no drone or rasp |

I wouldn't get rid of the second resonator unless you are replacing it with an Xpipe.

Subscribing. I like the sound of the stock exhaust but like others find it a bit too tame and quiet in open valve/M1/2 mode when spirited driving. I also need to keep a quiet closed valve option and don't want to hassle of swapping parts.
Thinking of a double resonator delete and running straight pipes in that section. Something like this - . But people are suggesting an x-pipe in place of the second resonator? |

Most people who delete the resonators, and opt for either a x-pipe or hpipe to replace the second, say there is some volume increase and a slightly deeper tone overall. Because you are keeping the stock can and valves, you should also be able to make it quiet on demand.
