Hey guys,
I been seeing a lot of people switching to 5w-30 oil for the g8x platform from the Bmw OEM one. My tuned A90 Supra just got switched from 0w-30 to 5w-30 and it feels so much better even though I had 0 oil consumption issues. Considering the s58 is a more powerful motor but running the same oil as stock b58, would it be better to switch to 5w-30? Also- some people have been telling me to go 5w-40 so now I’m very lost lmao |

what feels so much better about it? 0w or 5w at "cold" temps is more or less splitting hairs
if anything i'd think people would be moving to 40 weight oil in the S58, got to imagine the 30 weight is only there for fuel efficiency purposes but who knows. |

Since you’re in Florida where it’s warm there’s no difference between 0W-30 and 5W-30 since they’re both 30 weight when warm. Unless you track your car, or run E85 fuel, stick with BMW TPT oil.

For a Canadian winter sub -15F weather, would I be better off using 5W-30 then?

Use whatever oil the dealer puts in it, you have a new car with warranty and 3 years of complimentary service.

For extra cold use the 0W-30 over the 5W-30, if you can.

I think I'll move to 5w-30 for the first change after breakin. I feel if its a little thicker it might help some on the track.

Why would 5W-30 be any thicker than 0W-30 or 10W-30 on track? When all these oils are warmed up they’re the same 30 weight.

Most people don't understand engine oils at all. I've been looking into them for years and I'm still one of those people.
Generally speaking, the benefit of a 5w-30 over a 0w-30 is that the 5w-30 will shear down from the 30 weight at a slower rate compared to the 0w-30 oil. The closer the two weights are, the slower that shear rate or rephrasing it, the better the shear stability. For very cold temperatures, a 0w oil is best. For track use with a lot of heat cycles, a higher hot weight is better, but not too much (this part is difficult to figure out). There are a lot of other numbers that determine how an oil will behave and how well it'll handle wear. BMW has a requirement (LL-01 FE) for the engine so any oil that will meet those is fine.

Well at the end of the day in your BMW owners manual the recommended weight is 0-30. The oil weight rabbit hole is pretty deep with opinions from all of the forum "experts". If 5-30 was a better weight BMW engineers would recommend it. My rule of thumb is change your oil every 5k using 0-30 and all is good. Enough said...

Are you able to get Liqui Moly oil locally in your area? The brand has 2 specific oils that met the LL01-FE specification. Both are called "Special Tec B FE" one in 5w-30 weight and the other in 0w-30 weight. I can't for the life of me find the 0w-30 weight but the 5w-30 weight one is pretty widely available. If you can't find it locally FCPEuro sells the 5w-30 weight oil and they do ship internationally (they're based in Connecticut). Aside from Liqui Moly, Castrol EDGE Euro 0W-30 A3/B4 also met the specification.

Including my Alpina B4 (F32), the dealer always filled in LL04 - 0W30.
Now, on the M4 Comp (G82), they use, acc. to BMW Germany's advice, Shell LL04 - 5W30. Region: Germany, actual temperatures attached (°F = °C X 1,8 plus 32)

The easiest way I can explain it is Ow is for cold start up the oil is at its thinnest and allows for oil to move faster and more freely through the engine bottom to top back to bottom and through the oil journals for cold starts when a engine has sat and all the oil is back down in the sump.
So if you want to move from a 0w to a 5w knowing what I said that’s on you. After your car has run for 15-30min your Ow or 5w oil is no longer that it’s 20w-30w-40w when you’d actually be raging on the engine getting blow by not at cold start. Toyota motors have went from a 20w to 16w Bmw non performance engines 30w to 20w Bmw performance engines 40w to 30w All only for fuel economy purposes only. The S55 had a option of 0w30 or 0w40. The s58 is now only 0w30. At one point the bmw 2.0 N20B20A around 2013 ran 0w30 then around 2014/15 moved to 0w20 for fuel economy. Ford with the 5.0 mustang with a track package take 5w20 and they grill you to run 5w30 on the track and go back to 5w20 on street for fuel economy. I do want to make note that ford does not tell you to go from 5w30 to 10w30 because the cold weight has nothing to do with hot engine operating performence. In what I’ve read increasing the cold weight would be harmful to the longevity of the motor because of poor lubrication at start up. If it was my car I’d always run 0w even in a that started 5w20, 5w30, 5w40. If the car ran 0w20 I’d increase it too 0w30 And if 0w30 I’d change to 0w40 as long as I was 100% sure the hot temp of the oil wasn’t to thick for new clearances. Like in the instance of the bmw 2.0 N20B20A were the motor oil changed but the engine didn’t or when ford tells you to go to 5w30 for track use but back to 5w20 on the street. Id probably run 0w30 all the time and do the research about running 0w40. I ran 0w40 in my n54 motor from new till 135k till it was hit and it ran perfect and it called for 0w30 or 5w30. I wanna run 0w40 in my g80 with the s58 but I still haven’t found enough information to make me feel 100% yet. This is only my opinion and what research I’ve done with different manufactures and oil vistocities. |

The specs of this oil are absolutely perfect for every aspect: cold start protection, good protection at temp, high TBN for resistance against oil oxidation and high zinc ppm. The only downside of this oil is that it uses quite a bit of viscosity modifiers
