oil filter location and the reach
My first oil change is coming up and to be honest I have reservations about the location of the oil filter and what it takes to get to it.
Paint finish on my car is perfect and I don’t want the tech rubbing against the left front fender. Did any of you guys supply some kind of microfiber towel or protection in addition to whatever they lay over the fender? What a bonehead move from BMW to locate that filter in such a difficult spot.

I just did it myself instead. If anybody’s going to screw my things up I’d prefer it be me
Oil filter isn’t so bad to get to. Iirc it’s just a couple screws and unclip the little tank that’s in the way. Fwiw, TIS and the video below recommend putting the filter onto the cap, and then screwing it on. People in the comments mentioned they had an easier time putting the filter in the housing first, and then screwing the cap on. I didn’t try that but it might make lining up the locating dowel on the filter a little easier.

I’ve had plenty of experience with past automobiles —impressions in the metal fenders from mechanics leaning over to do work in/ under the hood area, where it looked like a golf ball hit the car and bounced couple times
this car’s front fenders are aluminum and I imagine the metal is soft —- I don’t want to have to do PDR or anything to the car after getting it serviced

Here is a picture taken when the dealership's techs were doing a brake fluid change on my car during a track day.
I don't think you have to worry about scratches during an oil change, they know how to protect against it.

To all of you obsessed and worried about your car, let me say that yes, stuff happens. I've had bad stuff happen to my cars too. But the vast majority of the time, the technicians are careful, they are experienced and they aren't going to mess up your car. An oil change is the most basic service there is, they do it all the time, and your little fragile baby will be just fine. Seriously, if you're going to be this anal-retentive and worry constantly about the car, you will never enjoy it. Go buy a Porsche and chat with your buddies about the best q-tips to use when cleaning the holes in the cross-drilled rotors.

Talk to your dealership then and see if he can keep a straight face.
Dent repair after and oil change? Come on.

Sucks BMW put the filter in such an awful location. Previous generation was so easy.

If OP wants to know how to do his own oil change he can just ask that. No need to write about “automobiles getting golf size ball damage at BMW dealer”. OP just google your question and watch video. It’s very simple. |

If youre so worried about a BMW mechanic scraping your car during a basic oil change...how do you find the courage to drive your car/park your car in and/or around public roads.
Might as well just leave it in the garage forever |

What a shit location for an oil filter. I had to unbolt and move some extra stuff because of my flex fuel components. Easy to drop stuff into the abyss. Found it easier to plug the oil filter in first and then put the cap on in my situation.

With the filter locked into the cap, it wasn't easy to get it back into the housing. |
